After shooting in Delhi she returned to Hyderabad for two weeks and declares, "I've been able to pick up quite a bit of Telugu. At this rate, people need to be careful about what they talk about me in Telugu." Amrita Rao laughs heartily as she recollects receiving offers from the Telugu film industry now and then, thanks to her Rao surname. "Since my modelling days, a lot of people thought I am a Telugu. I come from South Karnataka and speak Konkani." After films like Main Hoon Na and Vivah, offers from the South were in plenty. "I wanted to establish myself in Hindi. Now, after the success of Vivah, I can afford to devote time for regional films. Surender Reddy's film Athiti has a wonderful script and I couldn't turn it down. It's one of those few films where the heroine gets to act. I think it will be a special debut for me." Speak the language Impressed with the way some of her scenes have been shot, she says, "My introductory scene is unique and I wish I'd get something similar in a Hindi film. Surender Reddy is technically brilliant. And Mahesh Babu is an excellent actor. Some actors tend to get laidback after becoming successful, but not Mahesh. He is extremely focused and gets his scene right in one take. I keep telling him that he should act in Hindi films." Fluent in Konkani, Marathi and Hindi, she says learning Telugu was simple because of the commonalities between Telugu and Marathi. "A few words and phrases are pronounced similarly in the two languages. This helped demystify Telugu for me." Among the Telugu films she's seen, she chooses Bommarillu as her favourite. "Genelia was impressive." Amrita gets to act with Genelia's co-star in Bommarillu, Siddharth. "He's done Rang De Basanti in Hindi. But this new film, David Dhawan's Hook ya Crook, will show him differently." Amrita states her calendar is booked till the end of the year, "all thanks to the phenomenal hit called Vivah." There's E. Niwas's My Name is Anthony Gonsalves and Anil Kapoor's Shortcut, where she'll be up against Arshad Warsi and Akshaye Khanna. "They are very good actors. I'll need to polish my acting skills to keep pace with them," she laughs. |
