not sure if you are the same DW from PFDB. not just your place, but several small towns. in rEpalle lakshmi theatre, they screened it for 99 days lifted it on 100th day and started showing from 101 day onwards and heard ran for another 20-30 days afterwards. the custom in those days used to be, "if a movie runs for 100 days straight in a theatre, the theatre owner should present new clothes to all of it's staff. to avoid this, some stingy theatre owners used to use the tactics mentioned above"

MARCH 29, 1963 is a red-letter day in the history of telugu cinema because the film “Lavakusha” which can be easily said as the greatest hit of telugu film industry was released on that day.

Credits: It is the only GEWA color film in telugu film industry. (GEWA color was not successful due to its high power requirement and intense heat produced by the necessary lighting).
Though some films were made partly in color prior to Lavakusha and some dubbing films were released in color, Lavakusha is the first straight color film ever produced in telugu.
REASONS FOR SAYING LAVAKUSHA AS THE ALLTIME GREATEST HIT TELUGU FILM
Telugu film industry had witnessed many sensational hits which created many records, but overall if we see the longevity of many records, Lavakusha is unmatchable.
Lavakusha is the first telugu film which ran 100 days with regular shows in all centers it was released (in first release 26 centers). It took more than a decade to cross the number of 100 days centers for any other film.
Lavakusha had direct jubilee in 14 centers in its first release (only one center Gudivada had a shift jubilee run (Sharat-139 + Srinivasa – 36). Prior to Lavakusha, no other film had jubilee run in 4 centers.
In one year time, Lavakusha was seen by 1,95,00,000 which was a record for a long time.
In one year time, Lavakusha was exhibited 100 days in as many centers as 50 (with regular shows) which was a record for more than three decades.
Lavakusha’s repeat run value was one of the greatest among telugu films.
Lavakusha had 469-day uninterrupted run in Hyderabad with regular shows that too in very less theaters (Basant – 203 + Regal – 56 + Rahat – 56 + others) which is still a record.
Lavakusha is the first telugu film in its first run which collected one crore and this was a record for long time. (Prior to Lavakusha, no film collected at least one-third of this amount which shows the potential of this film).
Lavakusha even today holds the highest run in many centers, for example, Warangal. Lavakusha’s 252-day run in Rajarajeswari theater is still unsurpassable even after 43 years. Even after this majestic run, the film was shifted to G.R. Talkies (in HanamKonda) and there also it had almost 50 days run.
In many centers like Anakapalli, Lavakusha is the first direct 100 days film and it took more than a decade for any other film to have 100 days in those centers.
In many centers like Amalapuram, Lavakusha is the first direct 175 days film and it took more than a decade for any other film to have jubilee run in those centers.
Name any other superduperhit film, it has limitations, but Lavakusha when compared to other previous superhits had almost none.

Yes. Until NBK crossed with Muddula Mavaih, only NTR could cross Lavakusha centers (or) in other words, only after the exit of NTR (that too after 5 years of exit) could any other hero be able to cross that record. - answered by Mr. Vijay
One more record which was created and was a record for more than three decades of Lavakusha is it is the first film to run 80 days in 80 centers. - addendum by Mr. Vijay
