economic times ;12.04.07; Banglore edition 7th page Coke bets on local buzz to push fizz in AP, TN Sreekala G HYDERABAD THIS summer, Coca-Cola India is planning to unleash a slew of new campaigns in the southern markets, which account for a major share in sales. The company is planning summer campaigns with regional focus, particularly for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, while for Karnataka the national commercials will continue to rule. In Kerala too, there are no special campaigns planned. The company has already signed up Tollywood superstar Mahesh Babu as brand ambassador for ThumsUp in Andhra Pradesh. It has signed on Riya Sen for the Limca campaign, which is ready to hit the screen. “We decided to rope in Mahesh Babu looking at his popularity. The new campaign, conceptualised by Leo Burnett, portrays the contemporary image of the ThumsUp drinker, who will do anything for his thunder and Mahesh fits the bill,’’ says a Coke spokesperson. The new rising star and fresh face has replaced megastar Chiranjivi, who has been endorsing ThumsUp for over three years. Mahesh Babu has pulled off Tollywood’s biggest ever hit ‘Pokri’ this year. In fact, Coke has adopted a different marketing strategy for each of the southern markets. “We churn out campaigns keeping in mind local culture and tastes. Andhra is predominantly a ThumsUp market and accounts for over 50% of our sales. But for other brands including Coke and Fanta, we will not have any special local campaign for AP. We will extend our national ad campaign to AP for those brands,” he says. Similarly, the company has a different strategy for Tamil Nadu. “Being a Coke market, we have Tamil superstar Vikram endorsing the brand in Tamil Nadu. Other brands will be part of our national campaign in Tamil Nadu,” he says. Interestingly, the company’s summer campaign for Fanta will not feature Rani Mukherjee. Instead, it will be endorsed by southern star Trisha. “Rani will continue to be our brand ambassador. However, considering the rising popularity of Trisha, we have decided to build our summer campaign around her. We are sure, she will be able to catch eyeballs in the north as well.” The company has no special ad campaign planned for Karnataka. “Looking at the cosmopolitan nature of Bangalore and its surroundings, we have decided to stick on to our national campaign. We will not be launching any regional campaign featuring local stars in Karnataka,” he said. In Kerala too, the company is not planning to launch any special campaigns. “Industry reports suggest that south accounts for over 30% of the national soft drink market. Continued investments in marketing initiatives around quality and safety of our products and an increased focus on the consolidated bottling operations helped us register good growth rate and expand market share. Coca-Cola in India delivered a 12% unit case volume increase in the fourth quarter of 2006. With our wide portfolio of brands, we are the market leader in south as well.” SIGNAGE RECHARGE • Coke has adopted a different strategy for each of the southern markets • AP is a ThumsUp market and accounts for over 50% of Coke sales • Tamil Nadu will have superstar Vikram endorsing the brand in Tamil Nadu • The company has no special ad campaigns planned for Karnataka and Kerala |
