Big B had sold the rights of much hyped wedding of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai for more than Rs 5 crore to the Travel and Living, a T V channel in the U K. The channel has a big viewer’s base in Britain and especially for this wedding they will find the Asians settled in that country as avid viewers. It was for this reason that the local media was kept at bay and never allowed near the wedding couple and when one photographer tried to snap a photograph, he had to be admitted to hospital due to assault from one of black cat commandos.
As an insider explains, ‘ If they had sold the rights to cover the wedding to a channel, then they could not possibly allow any Indian media to cover the event. Even the photographers who shot the pictures have been bound under confidentiality contracts not to release or reveal any pictures to any media.’
In fact, the Bachchans had originally approached the U K’s top lifestyle magazine ‘ Hello’ for the sell of wedding rights but somehow the deal could not be struck. This magazine had earlier bought the wedding rights of Arun Nayar and Liz Hurley for two million pounds. The wedding was held in India at a palace-turned-five star hotel in the princely city of Jodhpur.
A proposal was also sent from an India based T V channel for the wedding rights but Bachchans were averse to giving it to an Indian channel. They had already made up their mind to give the rights to some foreign channel. However, this has happened for the first time in India that any celebrity sold his wedding rights to any channel. In India, the marriage is generally considered to be sacred and above these commercial concerns. But times are changing…!! |
