Here we are talking about 2 offences.
1st - from owner - not returning security deposit.
2nd - from owner - not obeying housing/rental laws
you can not mix the two. If you apply in small claims court, they treat them as 2 different issues and OT mama's friends will definitely win this case.
If home owners association files a case against home owner, they may include OT mama's friends also as part of the offense. Court may fine them.. but there is a good chance that it would be mostly home owner's responsibility.

A house owner can rent a house provided he is also not living there. For eg my friend rented his own house here and is living elsewhere. same type lo kinda paina vundakudadu as per rules.

OT mama,
let me give my experience.
I was in a similar situation and He gave me checks in $200 denomination. I was never able to cash them as the checks always bounced. finally, he left the house and I was unable to even track him. I lost all the money. Good thing in your case is at least he is the home owner. so he may not leave the house. but, u never know.
Other alternative is to go with a complaint in small claims consumer court. It may coast you ~ $50. If the other person is not fond of courts, he may settle the amount with you.
Also, $100 a month is not a good idea because... you will have to suffer this angryness for 11 months which causes more damage to ur health over a period of 11 months than $1100.
So, My advise is to settle down with him as much as you can and if possible, take some coupons in his gas store so you can be sure of getting that money.

Edison lo durhamwoods apartment vundi.. asalki basic repairs cheyyakunda.. with no utilities - they will charge 1100.00 per month rent. they will charge for any repairs each 50.00 and more. no human being will take complaint through phone. you need to leave voice message and at the mercy of the call return. they are ruthless to charge for every penny and take huge cut in deposits for repairs when you vacate.
desis side:
they will share apartment with another family if it is two bed rooms.
singles aithe.. minimum 4 to 6 members share chesukontam. min 3 to 4 cars park chesukovachu. weekend 20 mandhi vachi stay chesina pattinchukodu. you can sub lease.. you can rent on your own even though they know you are moving out.. no questions asked.
andaru ee benifits choosi.. aa company em chesina mana vaallu bad service ki, deceptive payment methods ni constructive ga question cheyyaru.
in peak demand months, they will charge the rent from month 1st.. and hand over keys on 10th or 15th for repairing and carpet changing when some one move out. still people want to pay and wait for 10 to 15 days to get apartment.
now tell.. whom to blame to this issue. Desis? or companies. |

mama.. oka separate thread esi discuss cheddam. idi both ways lo problem vundi mama. american apartment management companies.. min 1yr lease tappinchi ivvvavu.. and some do it with 100 dollars extra rent. we dont go there since we want for cheap rent and we dont want credit checks run and we dont want to face all that waiting and paper work. so when you compromise on all that issues and you commit.. you are taking risk and risk could be anything.
Coming to the Edison area and NJ/NYC desi living.. due to the fact of high demand.. every apartment company/owner exploiting in every possible manner and it is most fucked up place for renting or for room sharing.
so i dont see any surprise here OT like you feeling. First one month baadha paddanu.. taruvaatha careful ga vunna anthe. |

what you friend can do is: discuss a deal to pay atleast 50% in single payment and move on.
