gaali maayya, when a culture gets raped and subdued for centuries, revivalists look for all kinda excuses to extol themselves in their search for the past glory. in such crisis times, man loses his senses and falls for hyperbole, a tendency to exaggerate and in general distort things so they suit his world view. Just cuz someone does it, does not mean I should do it.
thamasoma jyothirga maya ante, light is used as a metaphor and the source is a lamp/deepam. the role of a deepam is limited - its like a messenger but not the message itself. never give more importance to the messenger.

Light symbolises knowledge, and darkness ignorance. Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Also, knowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all our outer-achievement can be accomplished. Hence we light the lamp to bow down knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth. Knowledge backs all our actions whether good or bad. We therefore keep a lamp lit during all auspicious occasions as a witness to our thoughts and actions.
A tube light or a light bulb would also remove darkness. However, the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil in the lamp symbolises our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly, we should acquire such knowledge which takes us to higher ideals. |
