Finally got around to watching this one. A sincere fare that gets muddled in the second half. for a change, shah rukh is controlled and lets the story take over. I would give a 9/10 for first half but overall 6-7/10. Ashu effectively controlled some scenes without dramatizing them but for scenes that prolly needed some drama, he carried them on like a documentary, prolly trying not to re-do lagaan. but this way, he doesnt really carry us with Mohan Bhargav's thought processes. again, song placement seemed forced and the whole love angle was done well in the first half and screwed up later. Surely, the movie would make every NRI think once about his choices. Also, the reason mohan goes back to US is not explained clearly - one thing we can look at is prolly to think through things clearly and the other thing I thought of was to fulfil his responsibility of completing his project at NASA. There were lot of english dialogues but no subtitles in Hindi, wonder how it was in India. BGM by Rahman (?) was good at a lot of places and at others, by ensuring silence remains, Ashu built up the scenes well. One scene everyone should watch for is when the villagers say 'India is world's best country in culture and traditions'. Ashu's idea for the scene was good ( kind of slap to Subhash Ghai's irritating 'pardes' - but his hero's answers were not very satisfactory - I could have given some ideas this scene is especially imp for a lot of folks on our DB who keep repeating the same stuff of culture and traditions. Also, the motif to elevate the hero was by making him generate electricity - now, the acute need for electricity should have been stressed better to make us empathize with his heroism to a certain extent. he does not and that whole scene kind of loses its steam. On the whole I think, could have been a much better movie but for the insufficient thinking for the second half. I hope Ashu doesnt get dejected and keeps trying to make good cinema without bowing to any commercial pressures. |
