Indians have always been very proud of their heritage... that is the reason why we go gaga over anyone who is of Indian heritage and famous...one reason is because usually overseas indians are working class, engineers and doctors. therefore, when anyone becomes famous like shyamalan or gurindher chadha people get excited ...but i will say this a lot of overseas indians do take pride in for example shyamalan's acheivment in hollywood...

although it may not seem like an acheivement shyamalan, chadha , and jindal have done is quite great. the main reason because even though these guys consider themselves americans there is always outsider "stigma" attached. they are still considered as "indians" by americans.

excerpt:
Of course, these discussions are bound to bring up names like Gurinder Chadha and Mira Nair.

And that's really irritating! (Chadha's Bend It Like) Beckham was a British film, with some characters of Indian origin. It's not an Indian film. Why must we always appropriate? Why do we suddenly start claiming (M Night) Shyamalan as one of ours (laughs) when the poor man hasn't had anything to do with India for most of his life? Why do we want to bask in their glory?

ANY 'NEWS' PUBLISHED BY ANY INDIAN NEWSPAPER PURPORTING INDIAN 'GREATNESS AND SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS' SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH A 'BUCKET' OF SALT- A PINCH IS NOT ENOUGH.

There is nothing new about these concocted and unverified stories that get published. Must be the same reporters who write on gender issues without even verifying their facts. The only truth in some stories generally is that that the narrative was provided by a person of a certain gender.

This story is a matter of shame for the Indian Media. The first time I saw the story in Times of India (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com) I had submitted my comment. I had said that a quick search on web did not reveal any examination described in the report. NASA's websites too did not mention anything about the so called International Scientist Discovery examination. If I, using limited resources and simply by using publicly available tools of the web, could verify this fact, why none of the Indian newspapers could? The truth is that the journalists did no homework - none at all!! This speaks a lot of the calibre of our journalism. I am ashamed.

This is an classic example of how our media is desparately looking for 'breaking news' without even checking the authenticity of the event. Today's parents are also to be blamed. There are very high and unrealistic expectations from the younger generation that everybody want his kid to be Sachin Tendulkar or Sania Mirza or equivalent. Why can't we just leave kids alone to enjoy their well deserved and precious childhood?

Ridiculous. Questions the credibility of media reports. And it is such a put down for India and Indian media at NASA.

There is a possibility that the exam was conducted.NASA is always in search of such genius..in the pas there have been many proofs as shown on Discovery channel too that NASA and FBI is capable of covering up any matter..be it a controversy on landiong on moon..or facts etc. shown on 9/11 by a recognised director.. So..though it may sound like movie but NASA wanted the thngs secretly..adn probably would have called the boy for education etc. in the required field if ths things would not have been so publicised. If now they admit that such exam is conducted..they will recieve info/queris for next year also.

I am shocked seeing this news today that none of the media have taken pains to validate the information given by Saurabh Singh. Some questions to ponder: 1)Why didn't Mr.Kalam respond to this news which came out on Feb 8th? 2)What was the conversation between Saurabh and Mr.President during their appointment(I assume the appointment took place)?

This is not new. This kind of reporting only demonstrates the immaturity of out TV media. We cannot forget the reporting of Mumbai blasts 2 years ago by most of TV news agencies . Eager to be the fsatest and first, they kept on increasing the number of blasts to 4 when actually 2 blasts had occured. It is time, the TV media looks into it's own style of working and they give report as true and on time in stead of first and fastest but incorrect.

The State of Monkeys needed a Monkey to take them for a Ride! A small Google search would have revealed the correct situation. Is this the state of the credibility and integritty of our News Media? Even Human interest stories from whatever source they come must be cross-checked and verified!

Guys what I cant help wondering is, if the so called NASA ISD exam doesn't even exist.... How come President Kalam didn't point it out???

This is how the media sensationalize the news: even if it is wrong. The false information providers (the media) must understand their responsibility and act accordingly KK

Hopefully, media got a lesson, they deserved for so long. The concerned reporters should be sacked/taken to task so that such type of reporting without verification is prevented.

On the day of the news I checked the NASA site for details. Not finding any info, I attributed to my fault. Any credible reporter, including the prestigeous Times would call the NASA news directorate. ( I do not have Rs. 17/min kind of money. The dictum three independant source is not just an old man's rule. Now atleast Times should do the internal unvestigation to black list/stern warning to the people concerned. Hope you kep up the good work, as the worlds biggest News Paper of hundred odd years should. God Bless you in finding and punishing the guilty. Dr. B.S.Karadi, M.D. (USA) NRI living in India

This shows how foolish is Indian Media who are concerned only with spicy news to be delivered first and to make money. Now the time has come to put control on media also.Number of times media delivers the news without authenticating it. I guess NASA has to sue Indian media for propaganding wrong information to people.

A classicc example of where India is heading today, thanks to people who should know better, namely journalists, feature writers, actors, film makers, who have lost their soul and sold their dignity. For a tap on the back from the lowest of the low in America, those Indian journalists, feature writes etc.will not hesitate to sell India, its women and girls down the drain .That particular disease is called 'inferiority complex at its best,Indian style'. What would those particular Indians have done if the predominant language in America was not English? Would they have adopted Jamaica, for example,to legitimise their inferiority complex?

Maybe this is a good opportunity for all journalists to verify the stories before printing them. CBS fired reporters for publishing false storied about George Bush. Media is a powerful thing and should not be abused by people. That should also encourage people to not believe everything that is printed in the news and validate it somehow using their own techniques to actually believe its true.

You put it very correctly when you said the media is on steroids. The Times group is no exception. Particularly the Economic times has been falling over itself and hyping every recent news.

This incident shows the weakness in the whole infrastructure. I am amazed at the critical thinking level of those reporters that propogated the news. I am an Indian by birth but has been residing in the United States since my teenage years. Over these years i've learned a lot about cultures of both East and West. How countries around the world exelled socially, millitarily and scientifically. Since i've the indian blood in my i keep thinking will India be able to excell at these things. Learning from my experiences of my early child hood education in india and my high schooling in the US, i thinking India has the potential but its following the wrong path. The first thing to become a strong nation is that everyone must be educated. But a different kind of mindset exists in India. A literate person is the one who can speak English. On the other hand if the person knows Hindi, or any other regional language, its considered inferior not"Enlighted". This is what i think is wrong. Indian must produce critical thinkers and self suficient people who likes to charge of things and not just follow the west's lead. This incident makes me wonder if India is producing English literates who are fluent in the Western ways but lacks the mindset of the West.

How incredibly dumb is it of the media to report on the award without verification from NASA. Also, how incredibly poor is it for this article to be a headline. Is this 'Times of India' or some local sensational news based newspaper? hard to find a difference

Please be aware of the fact the TOI is also part of media and by accepting that news got picked up from here and there without any verification does not make any media including TOI to come out clean. I guess this is a trend currently of publishing the news without fully verifying it, it's just that since it was such a high profile one, so people would have tried to verify that and then it got busted. There may have plenty of other scenarios where it does not even reach to such a stage. I hope we should be very cautious in terms reporting these kind of things as this hurts the image not on the domestic front but internationally as well.
