there is an interview in rediff with gregory david roberts...interesting life...this would definately be my next book allthough 1000 pages does sound daunting. |

this is an aussie prisoner that spent 10 years in Mumbai as a fugitive .. he was originally a writer in Aus before becoming a robber ... he's written his life story focussing mainly around Mumbai as a book - 'Shantaram' .. quite a decent read -- I have some 200 more pages to go  Lot of it must either be fiction or he's been making notes for long .. the minute details he goes into would be close to impossible otherwise ... opens a whole new world of Mumbai to outsiders
Both crowe and depp were interested in the project but Depp bagged the rights ... as I read the novel with him in mind, he seems a very good fit.

Lindsay arrives in Mumbai after escaping from an Australian prison where he was serving a 19-year sentence for armed robberies that had fed his drug habit. In Mumbai, he meets Prabhakar who takes him to his native village where the locals name him Shantaram and teach him Marathi. Lindsay relaunches his criminal career as Shantaram in the city's notorious underworld.
Johnny depp is playing the lead role. seems Russel crowe is very much obssessed with this project.
