Condoms don't offer protection on every occasion. They certainly could not help students of Lucknow's Jai Narain Degree College navigate their way safely through a BA 2nd year examination.
Invigilators were at first baffled when they caught a boy with eight condoms hidden inside his underpants. However the secret was quickly revealed. Stashed inside the rubber were slips containing short answers, tips, formulae and other information that could him breeze through the test.
Apparently there were others who were relying a bit too much on contraceptives to keep them safe. Soon a second student was also caught with condoms stacked away in the folds of his pants. The folds had been stuck with gum to avoid detection.
Unrepentant, one of those caught reportedly said 'it was a condomed way to cheat' - a description that both examinees and invigilators found hilarious. Amid much laughter, the boy admitted he had learnt the trick from his girlfriend, who in turn had been coached by a lady invigilator. The lady had allegedly helped students of her own college copy so that no one was caught by the flying squad.
The situation became even more farcical when all the examiners refused to touch the 'evidence', given the place where it had been concealed. The college sweeper was summoned to gather the condoms and put them inside a file as proof for further action.
While the second cheat told invigilators that his condoms were relatively clean and had not left the folds of his pant, they weren't taking any chances. The very idea of coming in contact with something so vile filled them with disgust, they told the young offender.
Besides condoms, students were prepared to be criminally inventive in other ways too. While a third year examinee who came limping to the center was found with notes hidden inside the bandage on his leg, a girl at Eram College had put chits in an unmentionable place. When confronted, she destroyed the evidence by swallowing it.
Cases like these are only bound to increase with the education mafia in Uttar Pradesh successfully getting District Inspector of Schools-II Umesh Chandra, transferred. Chandra had single-handedly led a crusade against copying in the state. He had initiated action against several principals, college administrators and teachers for abetting the crime.
