Jack Sodara: >>Though Maoists, who exert considerable influence in the region, have not issued a threat to disrupt the match, police did not want to take chances. Ee statement tappa anni nijame. The stadium is in Pothina Mallaya Palem - in the outskirts of Vizag - one of the hot areas for buying land. The stadium on the outskirts of this portal city came to life Tuesday with thousands of cricket enthusiasts flocking to the ground to watch the second one-dayer between India and Pakistan. Cricket fans had started reaching the brand new stadium, which is yet to be completed, three hours before the match began at 9 a.m. It was a pleasant morning as hundreds of vehicles from the city carried the fans on the 15 km long route. This is the first international match to be played at the stadium. The five matches in Visakhapatnam so far have been played at the Municipal Stadium in the heart of the city. The city wore a festive look with hoardings coming up along the road to the ACA-VDCA stadium to welcome the two teams. Those who could not get tickets were standing on either sides of the road hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes. Scattered clouds made for pleasant weather. However, the clouds soon disappeared and the temperatures began soaring when the match began. With the temperature touching 37 degrees Celsius and 95 percent humidity, it was tough for players in the middle. The 27,000 capacity stadium was packed when the two captains went in for the toss. Indian opener Virender Sehwag's knock of 74 as he went on the rampage from the word go delighted fans, making the heat and the wait worthwhile. "It was as if Sehwag inaugurated the stadium with his aggressive knock," said an official of Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). "It was a treat to watch Sehwag," said Ramesh, a youth, who had come all the way from Hyderabad, 700 km away, to watch the match. Hundreds of people could not get tickets, but turned up at the stadium with the hope of making an entry and had to return disappointed. Like student R. Mahesh who said despondently: "I tried my best to buy a ticket even by paying extra money but it is not available." The tricolour could be seen all over the stadium. Unmindful of the scorching heat, some fans had tricolours pained on their cheeks. With Pakistani fans staying away from this city off the eastern coast, it was the Indian flag which dominated the stands. A fan was seen holding flags of both countries in his hands, perhaps to convey the message of peace. Municipal authorities have arranged a million water packets for the spectators. This is in addition to five packets given for each seat. Massive security arrangements were made in and around the stadium. Though Maoists, who exert considerable influence in the region, have not issued a threat to disrupt the match, police did not want to take chances.
