In the one-dayers, Balaji has taken 33 wickets in 28 matches at an average of 37.18 and an economy rate of 3.43. His best figures stand at 4/48. He made his ODI debut against West Indies in Vadodara in 2002 and was slammed for 44 runs in 4 overs thanks to explosive batting from openers Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds http://cricket.indiatimes.com/quickies/msid-108455 6.cms |

The away series against Pakistan changed Balaji's fortunes. From a hardworking bowler keeping the runs down, he turned into a match-winner. His accuracy was impeccable and his two deliveries in the Rawalpindi Test deserve special mention. The one that swung out in the air and then dipped in remove Kamran Akmal's off stump. The other delivery was the one that swung in and then sharply moved away to elicit an edge from skipper Inzamam's bat Balaji made his Test debut against New Zealand at Ahmedabad in 2003. He just managed one wicket in the match, that of Robbie Hart whom he trapped leg before wicket. In the eights Tests that he has played, Balaji has taken 27 wickets at an average of 37.18. His best figures stand at 5/76 |

Balaji's 4 for 63 on the opening day of the final Test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi in 2004 comprehensively proved that he was more than a flash-in-the-pan. One of the heroes of India’s successful campaign in Pakistan, Balaji managed to win not just cricket matches for India but also Pakistani spectators’ hearts. Balaji enjoys this ability to bowl long spells without erring in direction or slowing the pace. But this ability has meant that the team has been using him more like workhorse than a bowler who can attack in short bursts. The man to benefit has been Irfan Pathan. |

Lakshmipathy Balaji has come a long way from the time he was hammered for 44 runs in 4 overs on his one-day debut against West Indies in 2002. Since then this whippy right-arm bowler has surprised everyone by his ability to take wickets at crucial junctures. (AFP) He bowls with an open chest action and makes the ball move away from the right-handed batsman. His partner Irfan Pathan might have hogged all the limelight but Balaji remains an integral part of the Indian new ball attack. He is the only right-arm pace bowler in the team and provides variety with the left-armers Irfan, Zaheer or Nehra operating from the other end |
