But in the spirit of the maxim that the fame burns brightest before it is snuffed, the best was round the corner. Amrohi’s Pakeezah, for which Meena was paid the princely sum of a gold asharfi, was earmarked by destiny to prove a gold mine.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis previewed some reels of Amrohi's lavishly conceived and executed Pakeezah and convinced the estranged Amrohi and Meena to complete the film, launched in 1956. Despite her rapidly deteoriating health, she gave the finishing touches to her performance as a nautch girl who dares to dream of a life as a married woman.
Pakeezah was a perfect swan song for Meena. Her voice caressed each pathos-laden word (few people know that her much-revered vocal inflections were honed to perfection on the sets of Sharda with the help of Raj Kapoor on a tinny tape recorder).
Even as the nation marvelled at her ability to infuse life into her role in Pakeezah, Meena Kumari breathed her last. Within a couple of months of Pakeezah's release, Meena Kumari died on March 31, 1972. And left behind a film befitting her legend.

The scene where she tries to seduce her husband
is one of the greatest scenes of Hindi cinema. The kiss in Black is heavily inspired from this scene. |

Idi correct dialog..of course bhrigu saar kavitvam is equally passionate.
Idi MK last cinema kaadu. her last film was an atrocity called Gomti ke kinaare .
Cinema lo inka konni terrific dialogues unaayi..ippudu gurtuku raavatledu
MK had turned into a bloated faced alcholic while shooting for this film that was in the making for more than 10 years . Most of MKs dances in the film were done by a dupe.(most of the dance sequences are either long shots or shots of dancing feet)..guess who the dupe was?? yester year vamp Padma Khanna .
Anyways this yedupugottu cinema is not my cup of tea. The film pales before the drama and passion of Mughal E Aazam.

Unless you have patience and a flavor for classics, I wouldn't recommend this movie. But as I mentioned in my post, it is worth watching atleast once, if you are really interested in urdu literature. |

unfortunately, it is the same in almost every movie of hers [due to her drinking]. infact, this is one of the reasons why I don't like her. But, in this movie her performance was excellent. I did not find Meena kumari on the screen, it was 'Pakeezah'. |

Pakeezah - the story of Nargis (Meeena Kumari) who grows up as a beautiful dancer/singer Sahibjaan , who later will be renamed by Salim (Raj Kumar) as ‘Pakeezah’ for her innocence and piousness. When Salim re-names her ‘Pakeezah’ and decides to marry her, initially she agrees, but later, she refuses and returns to the brothel house. The movie takes a twist when it is revealed that she is none other than Shahbuddin’s (Ashok Kumar) daughter, who happens to be Salim’s uncle.
The cinematography in this movie is extraordinary when compared to other films of that era. The brothel house and haveli set designs are amazing, and Meena Kumari’s costumes were so much so imperially designed. On the whole, it was a very luxuriantly picturised movie. Performances by artistes, particularly Meena Kumari & Ashok Kumar were outstanding. It is one of my favorite movies. However, I feel this movie needs to be watched more than once to have a through understanding of the dialogues. I had difficulty with some urdu script, however, the beauty of urdu was well sketched in the movie.I think it was Lucknowi urdu. I am not a fan of Meena Kumari; in fact, I don’t prefer her movies. But this movie happens to be an exception for me.
This movie has terrific songs with awesome music.

There is a particular dialogue by Raj Kumar in this movie – describing the beauty of heroine’s feet (in the train). I am not able to recollect the exact phrase. Can some one post it here? May be Ibmast garu ? |
