Man swallows 15 cm long toothbrush C. Srinivasa Reddy, a 26-year-old man from Alwal, swallowed a15 cm long toothbrush on Tuesday. Swallowing coins, marbles, pieces of chalk or plastic items is common amongst young children and the mentally unsound, but perfectly normal adults doing so is very strange. “I swallowed it by accident. I was brushing my teeth and lost control over the brush after it went deep into the throat through my mouth,” is the explanation that Srinivasa Reddy gives. The brush went right down his throat, into the stomach where it got stuck. Dr Soma Badrinarayana, gastroenterologist and head of the department at Koti hospital who took the brush out says, “I was amazed to listen to a man tell us that he swallowed a toothbrush. It was actually a challenging task for us to remove the unmelting plastic brush, which was deep inside his stomach.” Even though the hospital authorities were a hesitant at first to remove the brush due to the risks involved, Dr Badrinarayana was confident and removed the obstacle by conducting an upper gastro intestinal endoscopy after scanning the stomach. Though the patient didn’t complain of any pain, he was in a state of shock. But Dr Satavahana Chowdary of Apollo Hospital is very suspicious over Srinivasa Reddy’s mental balance though. “No normal person swallows a toothbrush,” he says. But for doctors at Koti ENT Hospital people coming to them for assistance after swallowing bones, small pieces of stones and chalk pieces is quite common. There are least three cases a month. Apart from chalk which melts, other items are removed through endoscopy and doctors caution people against eating too many bananas or digestives in order to naturally flush out objects as they can obstruct kidney functions and cause serious problems. Also get professional help as soon as possible. |
