Critics... Rascals! Fans won't let go of Rajni and Kamal: Tamil cinema's 50-plus lodestars who don't—or can't—show the way S. ANAND After 10 years, old stars Rajnikanth (55) and Kamalahaasan (51) clashed at the box-office on the same day this Tamil New Year (April 14). Not many sparks are flying, but this is hopefully the last such clash. We do not have to wait any longer to realise that it would be miserable to watch 50-plus men romancing women fit to be their daughters. Seen from a less ageist perspective, though, Rajni and Kamal may appear young in a state where the chief ministerial aspirant for 2006 is 82-year-old M. Karunanidhi (who incidentally continues to dabble in scriptwriting). Rajni's Chandramukhi, made on a lavish budget (probably compensated by extensive strategic placement of Tata Indicom ads), has been declared a clear and certain hit. Kamal's Mumbai Express, a comedy, will recover its costs—since very little was spent—and give the audience a few laughs. While Rajnikanth and Kamalahaasan may win their personal battles at the box-office, Tamil cinema will be the loser. In the last 20 years, the two heroes have put an enormous strain on that industry. There's been little fresh growth under these banyan trees. If anything, the younger stars (Vijay, Ajith) seek to emulate Rajni. Some, like national award-winning Vikram, want to be Rajni and Kamal rolled into one. Says film historian Theodore Baskaran, "It's become a case of the puppets pulling the strings. The puppeteers have no control." His grouse is that when films get tailored to suit a star's histrionics, cinema suffers. "Stars like Rajni do not play a character, they play themselves. They do not extend the future of Tamil cinema." Problem is, what irks the critics pleases the fans. Takeshi Nakayama, president of the Tokyo Rajnikanth Fans Association, had told Outlook sometime ago, "The best part is, unlike other Tamil stars who try to play different characters, Rajni plays himself in each film. And only he can." When the star is supposed to be an insurance against failure, the stakes are really high. In 2002, when Baba bombed, Rajni compensated the exhibitors. While a Vijay or Vikram film sells for Rs 1 crore per territory, Chandramukhi fetched a record Rs 2.25 crore. The film's success poses a threat—another Rajni movie in a couple of years. "If Chandramukhi had flopped, we could have forgotten about Rajni and moved on, given his political failure in the 2004 election. Its success is bad for the health of the industry," says an insider who, to survive in the industry, does not want to be named. His larger-than-life image, fan associations, frenzied reverence: all these make it impossible for the movie to become more important than the star. And so the audience is told in Chandramukhi that Rajni, who plays Saravanan, a psychiatrist, has the brains of 10 people. (Applause, hoots.) Several characters in the movie look straight into the camera (and at the audience) and praise Saravanan for his endearing qualities. He can do Matrix-like stunts, play the harmonium and sing Athinthom. He can read minds and seduce any woman. Better still, he says he will cure protagonist Chandramukhi (Jyotika), who suffers from multiple personality disorder, using 'psychosis' (while he means hypnosis). But the fans love it. Rajni is god, superman, sex-machine all rolled into one. He is ageless, and hence can romance 22-year-old heroine Nayanthara (seen less in the film than Saurav Ganguly/Tata Indicom). Rajni is Tamil cinema's intimation to immortality. He is also its bugle of death. It's not as if the younger generation is aloof to Superstar Rajni and prefers Vijay ('Ilaya Thalapathi' or Young Commander, the most saleable masala film hero today). A colleague's 15-year-old daughter wants to see Chandramukhi a second time. "Kids love Rajni's smile. Critics... Rascals! (2 of 2) " Vijay's Sachin (with Bipasha Basu playing a cameo), released on the same day, has been bowled out, proving the dictum—'There's only one superstar.' Imagine Sunil Gavaskar continuing to open India's batting, and scoring a triple ton. In contrast to Rajni, Kamalahaasan in Mumbai Express appears quite normal—and that's radical for a Tamil film hero. Playing a circus motorcycle driver (Avinashi), he has to often turn on a hearing aid, does not hide his paunch, and falls in love with a single mother (Manisha Koirala) who is a former bar girl and the mistress of a police officer. But Kamal flatters himself. Speaking to Outlook, he said, "This film's very French. I have tried to play my age, warts and all. Like Gerard Depardieu." He was not joking. A sycophant chipped in: "Sir is like Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford." In another interview, asked if Mumbai Express had any foreign source: "No! Probably the spirit of Oscar Wilde hovers over the film." Kamal's estimate of his own talents has always been high. "In Abhay (Alavandaan in Tamil), whatever Kill Bill wanted to do, we had done much before Kill Bill even hit the script stage." So you know what inspires Quentin Tarantino. No wonder Kamal's fans call him 'Ulaga Nayagan' (Universal Hero). In reality, Kamal's benchmarks can be rather low. Most informed reviews of Mumbai Express have noted that the 'perfectionist' Kamal's digital format movie looks grainy in large parts and many shots seem to be out-of-focus and dark. Admittedly, the film was "an experiment in frugality", if nothing else. "If you make a film in DV format, it has to be edgy. Like Collateral. For Mumbai Express, shooting on DV is a pointless exercise," says a filmmaker, who too does not want to be named though he has no intention of making a film with Kamal. Unlike Rajni, Kamal has an irrepressible urge to keep hitting the screen every six months. When no one comes forward to make movies with him, he writes and produces one himself (Rajkamal Films) and gets old friends like Singeetham Srinivasa Rao (Pushpak, Appu Raja) to direct them, or safely remakes Munnabhai MBBS (as Vasoolraja MBBS). He so seriously believes in running himself thin (not literally though) that he even advises Aamir Khan to make movies more regularly. It's not as if Kamal and Rajni were always like this. Ironically, Rajni at the beginning of his career was known for 'arty' roles. And his dark looks were his USP. In Chandramukhi, he is varnished white. Says Baskaran, "In Rudrayya's Aval Appadithaan (1978), Apoorva Raagangal (his debut, 1975), Moondru Mudichu (1975) or Avargal (1977), Rajni is so different. Many of these films, which fused artistic and commercial interests, starred both Kamal and Rajni." In literature, there's space for both creators of high artistic value and the really populist writers. Cinema could similarly throw up both genres of films. But in a culture that has worshipped mgr, saluted Sivaji Ganesan, reveres Rajni and adores Vijay, it's not the medium but the star that is the message. Today, Tamil cinema is so desperate for fresh directorial voices that a mere attempt to tell the same old love story in a 'different' way warms the hearts of the votaries of change. Successes like Thulluvado Ilamai, Autograph or Kaadhal may not be heard of much outside Tamil Nadu, but they are rays of hope peeping out of the humongous Rajni-Kamal shadows. If box-office success were the only criterion to judge the health of Tamil cinema, Chandramukhi is a dose of booster steroid. But good health doesn't come with steroids.
