Kingdom of Heaven: Finally a mainstream movie. A very timely movie that tells the world that there can be peace between the christian west and the Islamic middle-east. Movie is set during the times of the crusades when the christain europeans would attack middle-east and usurp contorl over places they thought belonged to them/Jesus. In the movie, Jerusalem is presently under the christains with a peace deal brokered with Saladdin, generally talked of as the most tolerant, aggressive but reasonable moslem ruler of those days. But the peace gets ruined because of some zealous xtian types and in the ensuing conflict, moslems take over Jerusalem. I thjink the movie is factually correct for the most part but am not sure about the character of Orlando Bloom, dunno if he is a fiction. All performances are just about average just like the movie and none of the scenes really gives you a gasp. Just that the director had the balls to tackle a sensitive subject like this gives this movie some brownie points. Any muslim who thinks that the muslims were shown in bad light should go take a look at the movie, for a long time now, this is one movie that shows them in vrey positive light. Strictly a DVD type movie. |

People I know : Another of those movies where the actor kicks ass but the movie falls flat cuz of poor, rudderless direction. Al Pacino as Eli Wurman, a New York publicist gives one of his best performances, IMO. One can get tempted to compare it to the one in Insomnia but I think both movies were shot around the same time and here as a perennially tired old man that has to balance his dirty work with his lofty ideals, Pacino delivers a stunning performance. The most funny part is that the movie takes a direct dig at the Jews and talks about this secret club in Manhattan downtown where people use opium and strike secret deals. Just adds to the conspiracy clouds around the Jews. Also direct parody of the Jesse jackson type Black politicians. No wonder the movie had no theatre release and ended up in the DVD circuit. Richard Schiff from 'west wing' as the tough Jewish business man is neat and so is the guy who acts as the black politician. Again, not a movie for kicks or anything. I did not like it in a big way but will treasure the talent called Pacino. He is the BEST after jackie boy |

Primer: Now if there was any movie that I found confusing, this is it and it is a big IF. wonder if it was the glenfiddich in my body or the real convoluted plot, I couldnt get the head or tail of this movie for sometime but could figure it out soon not in its entirety thgouh. A science fiction film produced/acted/music/edited/directed by a Dallas native Shane Carruth for a measly $7000 , this movie finally shoves it into the hollywood moguls that what matters is the IDEA, not the budget. I wouldnt reveal anything more about the movie but would strongly urge people who have time to 'think' about a movie to rent this one out. It's somewhat like memento but tougher since the director doesnt explain anything about the movie to the audience. Apparently there was a 5 min scene towards the end that explains things but this guy cut that out before he showed it at Sundance. This movie won some awards there and some critics have tried to compare it with 2001. I still have the DVD cuz a repeat viewing is a must to really stitch things together. |

Some nice movies that I could see Sideways : Delightful comedy about two friends that take off a week before the wedding of one of them. They drive to the wine country in the Santa Barbara county and their experiences make up this no-frills movie. one of them a wine afficianaodo and the other a women affi.... Paul Giamatti gives his character of a loser writer/wine expert the required depth and is very good in the pathos scenes. His uncertainty and sudden temper tantrums coupled with his comedic acting really stand out in the movie. There's nothing earth shattering about the movie but at the same time nothing not to like it. Mid way through the movie, Paul and the actress who played Maya have a dialogue where each look at wine and relate it to their own approach to life. I think that was the intent of the movie. Anyways, worth a dekko. will continue ..... |
