This just proves that historical movies treat history much like a chimp treats the glass at the zoo. |

one of my friend's review ------------------------------------ I watched "Cinderella Man" yesterday... Such is the impact of the movie that I am still not out of the 1930's era.... I still visualize "The Great Depression Time".. I still visualize Jimmy fighting out in the boxing ring... I went to the theater with lot of expectations... The same team (Jon Howard + Akiva Goldsman + Russel Crowe) delivered 'A Beautiful Mind' earlier.. Expectations sky rocketed as the same team came together again.. The movie met my expectations, if not exceeded it.... The movie started off on a perfect note.. With Piano music in the background.. Followed by Violin overtones as they display the title 'Cinderella Man'...... Wow! that set the tone for the movie... Don't miss the beginning... and pay attention to the background score.. especially during titles... This movie is about Courage, Devotion, Hope, Faith, and Destiny.....it is based on a true story.. The story of legendary boxer James J Braddock... The movie is set during 1930's..'The great depression' period.. We extensively discussed about 'Great Depression period' in our course work... and I theoretically know how bad the period had been.. Stock markets crashed... People lost money... Lost jobs.. Most importantly they lost hope... Many had tough time to feed their families... People who could not feed their children used to send their kids to relatives on temp basis (that's the last thing any one would do)... The movie is set up in that backdrop... The main protagonist, Mr. Jim Brad, was a popular boxer who lost all the money in stocks... Once a lethal boxer... He started loosing boxing bouts.... Growing old... Loosing confidence... All of a sudden he is exposed to acute poverty... Contrary to his earlier lavish life style, he is left on streets.. Searching for work to make ends meet... This movie has many defining moments... Especially the scenes involving Jimmy & his elder son, where he promises his son that he would not split apart the family what ever may be the situation... The scene where Jimmy goes to the club to beg money from his peers to pay his gas bills... The scene where Mae (Ms. Zellweger) visits Joe's house and the conversation between the ladies about supporting their husbands (One of the best scenes of the movie)... Finally, all the boxing sequences... they are all tad realistic... One might wonder why is a Boxer called 'Cinderella Man'?? Well, Jimmy's path to success is like a fairy tale... From a 'looser' - whose boxing license has been revoked, he goes on to be a 'World Champion'... Also, when people are in depression and lost hope... they look for a 'Hero', who would raise their spirits.. That's why 'Sea biscuit' & 'Cinderella Man' are so famous... It's difficult to explain.. you will know once u watch the movie.. Thousands of people pray for Jimmy as he takes on each and every opponent... He is source of inspiration for thousands of people.. That's 'Cinderella Man' for u in a nut shell... Talking about performances.. What would I say about 'Russel Crowe'??? He is at his usual best... It's the character 'Jimmy Brad' that's highlighted... We don't see "Russel Crowe" - The star not even in single frame... Its just Jimmy Brad all the way.. That's the beauty of Crowe's performance... Last but not least, Ms. Zellweger... She gave a controlled performance in the movie.. I have seen her playing some stupid characters in movies like 'Bridget Jonese's Diary', 'Me, Myself & Irene' etc., But, she is way different in this movie... You could see the anguish of a 'frustrated' mother in her character.. This will go down as one of her best performances.. As they say 'There is a woman behind every man's success'... The character of Mae (Ms. Zellweger) completely supports and complements Jimmy's character... I am planning to watch this movie again... probably again & again & again... Till it seeps in to my body... If you want to watch a meaningful movie that's worth 2 hours of ur valuable time.. u better watch this movie... |
