http://ww1.mid-day.com/news/city/2005/june/112692. htm 52% say Sarkar is a winner By: Nishant A Bhuse June 30, 2005 Baap of all movies: Producers, distributors and their associates are putting their money on everything from the first-day collection of Sarkar to performance of actors and actresses, besides the film’s overall performance Industrywallahs are taking wagers — from insiders only — on how Sarkar will fare. A Bollywood source told Mid Day yesterday, betting is currently underway among film producers, distributors and their associates across the country, especially in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. They’re putting their money on everything from the first-day collection to performance of actors and actresses, besides the film’s overall performance. The source, a small-time northern territory distributor, said, “They hire a sub-bookie (who maintains the accounts) and bid lakhs or even crores of rupees. It is a private affair, not open to the general public.” The source, who has himself put Rs 20 lakh on Sarkar, after the hype about it being inspired by Bal Thackeray’s life, added, “But this type of betting is extremely risky. If a distributor bets on a film he has already invested in and it flops, he’s had it.” Earnings If you win, you automatically get twice your wager, except in rare circumstances. If you lose, you lose all. A film is declared a hit if it runs full-house across the country –— or at least in the metros — for a few days. Categories Simple. It’s hit or flop — nothing in between. “There has been a lot of betting on Abhishek’s career graph, as he has had only two hits (Dhoom and Bunty Aur Babli). Sarkar will decide his market standing. Around 20 of my friends and associates have put lakhs of rupees on his performance,” said Shyam Lal (name changed to protect his identity) a northern territory distributor’s associate. What local bookies say “Local players are not involved in this — it happens only at higher levels. However, small-time sub bookies are invited to maintain diaries of industrywallahs,” said Pravin Bhai (name changed to protect his identity) a sports bookie from Mumbai. Pundit’s take “I am not aware about the betting angle, but Sarkar’s preview reports are fabulous. There is lot of talk about the film, and Amitabh and Abhishek are said to be outstanding. The budget is believed to be Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore as it was shot entirely in Mumbai. It is a sure-shot grosser. Advance booking across Mumbai and other territories is fantastic. Even multiplexes have full houses,” said Taran Adarsh, a film critic and trade analysist. Number crunching According to a sub bookie who maintains the accounts of a group of industrywallahs in Mumbai and Gujarat, bets on Sarkar from Mumbai and Gujarat alone amount to Rs 90 lakh, and the results will be out on July 3. The film • 52 per cent say it’s a winner • 48 per cent have bet against it Bachchan junior • 73 per cent say he has a bright future • 27 have bet against him |
