Ramu raj karta hai... Posted online: Friday, July 01, 2005 at 0000 hours IST I first heard of the name Ram Gopal Varma somewhere in Hyderabad. It was a new name for me but a very big name for Telugu cinema. I was told that he had made some of the most remarkable films at a very young age. And he had made his films without doing any course or without doing any degree or diploma or even working under some great directors as an assistant. He had rapidly grown into an expert just by seeing all kinds of films in his father’s shop which dealt with VCDs. Strange but true but within no time he made his own films which were better than the films made by some of the most senior and major filmmakers of the time... He soon came to Hindi films and made a striking impact with Shiva with Nagarjuna, his friend, in the title role. He stayed on to make many other films in Hindi, one more different from the other, one better than the other. He finally made a very big name when he made Rangeela with Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar (a name always associated with him for some reason or the other) and there has been no looking back. He was admired and even looked up to and ‘Ramu’ (the name he is known by now) works and gets work done by others, so many others in such a short time. ‘Ramu’ has the fascinating habit of working fast and working without making any compromises when it comes to quality which has made him rise to be the head of ‘The Factory’ today, literally a factory which makes films like other factories manufacture some very high quality objects. ‘Ramu’ makes his own films in his factory. But what I admire most about him is his large heart in which he has places for young men and women who are not easily given the opportunities to prove themselves. ‘Ramu’ has ‘created’ young filmmakers. ‘Ramu’ has ‘created’ actors and actresses. ‘Ramu’ has given technicians jobs which have inspired them to come up with their best. ‘Ramu’s factory is one of the most talked about subjects in the industry... And in the next few days ‘Ramu’ will fulfill his ambition of making a film with Amitabh Bachchan and with an added bonus to work with both Amitabh and his son Abhishek. His film, Sarkar I see as his greatest challenge as a director. I know his competitors and colleagues are eagerly waiting to pass judgement on the kind of film he has made. I also have this feeling that Sarkar can make or unmake him, anything can happen here. But there is a very strong feeling within me that he will walk out with the kind of triumph he has never seen before. Some time more and the world will know how Ramu’s sarkar (raj) will grow from here onwards. He has all the time, all the ambition and all the dreams. He will have to meet them and grow from success to more success. I find it very difficult to find myself in his place but then not all ‘Alis’ can be like ‘Ramus’. ‘Ramus’ are born to rule and they will.

Ram Gopal Varma grips a viewer from the very first scene when a man visits Sarkar to ask for justice for his raped daughter. The movie from then on is evenly strewn with gripping sequences – like the clash between Sarkar and Vishnu at the dinner table, the Sarkar-Rashid meeting, or the assassination attempt on Sarkar and Shankar (Abhishek) coming to rescue. In the first half of the movie, Abhishek Bachchan is more like a loverboy. But in the second half, his character goes through a transition. Inside him we can see the making of another Sarkar. Amitabh Bachchan deliberately underplays his character Subhash Nagare (Sarkar). He lets his character speak through silent glances and muted gestures – yet another impressive performance by the superstar. http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/bollywood/200507 01-4.html |

quote:Ram Gopal Varma too appeared to be in a cheerful mood considering that the verdict is already out on Sarkar. It’s a winner. He stoically stood by his statement that Abhishek had done a better job than Amitabh in the film.
