When MLAs from East Godavari district asked Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy about roads, bridges, drainage and other pending issues in their constituencies during the two-day Nagara Baata programme on Monday and Tuesday, the Chief Minister gave the spot assurances. But, when he heard about a unique proposal from Peddapuram MLA Thota Gopalakrishna, the Chief Minister was rather shocked.During the roadshow in Peddapuram town, the local MLA Gopalakrishna asked the Chief Minister to declare a major part of the town as red light area as in Mumbai and give licences for all sex workers. The Chief Minister, avoiding a direct reply, said: "We will look into it."
When contacted, Mr. Gopalakrishna told about his proposal. He said that flesh trade was a common profession in his constituency and none was shy about it. The MLA said that as no rehabilitation package had achieved results and 500 families were making huge money through this `trade'. It was better to give licences and keep all the families on the outskirts of the town.
"Peddapuram is a known place for flesh trade. Since olden days, Kalavantulu had been engaged in this profession. Now, the profession has become lifestyle. No Government or NGO will change their lifestyle," the MLA said.
