I had taken a lot of heat in many discussions in many boards over the years for letting people know of my views on Veerappan. I was seriously thinking if I should do this again - but I thought I thought I would take this opportunity to tell the intersted a synopsis of the many years of reading and tracking the life of Koose Muniswamy and am in the process of writing some chapters which might eventually lead into a book on Veerappan. I am not atemting to idolize or shower praises on a hard-core criminal - nor do I appreciate what he did - but I think he spent most of his life as a tormented heap of bones and flesh fighting his inner demons. He helped when he thought someone deserved help - but on the other side he killed his owen son. He killed a cop for ransacking his temple at Gopinatham and then he ALSO killed a fine gentleman who dedicatd his life to bringing change in a career thug. He had undivided respect to his role-models like Malayur Mammattiyan, Verappa Gounder et al. He loved his wife Muuthulakshmi and has a doting brother Arjunan - killed in combat. Sethukuli Govindan had served his master for 50 years and died alongside him in Dharmapuri. He had a nexus with politicians for four decades - a perfect example of the thug in the forests who is the engine of front-office politicans. He had a heart in the early years - and used some logic. He succumbed to his demons and decome a cold-blodded killer with no remorse for the next 20 years. The odd think in this swing-game is he stopped killing as his conscience caught up with him in the last decade. Overidden by sin he wanted to live - and did as a a cornered cat began doing whatever it was to gain some credibility. His wierd ideas included religion, caster, politics and kidnapping. He declared himself a Tamil patriot atleast once much to the Chagrin of Karnataka - whic loved and tolerated him for scores of years. A mix of politics combined with revenge of the STF for having lost commited inviduals could not nab him in what is called - the costliest man-hunt in the world for a single person even when hes was in a 1000 mile backyard. Dharmpuri was efficiently staged for sensationalism - and for fear of political and social revolt - after Verappan and Govindan ( now reduced to a group of 5 - and couple of newly made Tamil revolutionary friends) were captured. Veerappan was desperatly trying to live - at the cost of even removing his handle-bar moustache he gaurded with forcity for years - but died a dogs death = as somethink he should rightfully have. A life of complexities ended on Octobor 18th last year in the morgue of the general hospital in Dharmapuri - with SP Vijaykumars pistol geting rid of Veerappans eye in a short-range target practice and leaving a gaping hole. It was his version of an "Eye for an Eye" The govt rejoiced and and enquiry was oredered into the political links of Veerappan on both sides of the jungle in the last 40 years and heas been forgotten ever since. 120 people killed - 140 STF personnel promoted and given a large bonus. One unscruplous thug versus an indifferent government. Singh |
