On the whole, Pellaina Kottalo is most pleasant romantic entertainer. It doesn’t bring headache like recent big budgeted films.

Jeevi rating: 3/5 Punchline: Mistake vs weakness Genre: Family Drama/Comedy Type: Straight Banner: Aa Naluguru films Cast: Jagapati Babu, Priyamani, Astha Singhal, Raju Sundaram, Kota, Brahmanandam, Dharmavarapu, Ali, Sunil, MS Narayana, Krishna Bhagawan, Venu Madhav, Giribabu, Kovai Sarala, Jhansi, Sandesh, Madhu, Hema, Rajitha and Geetanjali Crew: Music: Agashtya Cinematography: Surendra Reddy Lyrics: Veturi, Chaitanya Prasad and Uma Maheswar Story - screenplay - dialogues - producer - direction: Madan Release Date: 8 December 2006 Review Story Hari (Jagapati Babu) and Lakshmi (Priyamani) have an arranged marriage. Hari’s friend (Krishna Bhagawan) tells him that he should not listen to his wife. Lakshmi’s friend (Jhansi) tells her that if she listens to her husband, she would remain a slave to him for the rest of her life. Hari and Lakshmi starting living together but soon they grow apart as each of them listens to the advice of their individual friends. At the same time, they are forced to visit their grandparents (Kota and Geetanjali) to perform some family rituals. The rest of the story is all about how they learn about love and married life from their grandparents. Artists Performance Jagapati Babu is excellent as the husband. His comic timing is perfect as always. Priyamani is cute in the role of wife. Kota and Geetanjali steal the show as the grandparents still very much in love. Ali and Venu Madhav’s comedy is good. Sunil has a meaningful role as the husband who loves his haughty wife unconditionally. Krishna Bhagawan’s one-liners are hilarious. Astha Singhal is adequate. Choreography Raju Sundaram has a guest role, which he has dubbed himself. Hema got a good role. The separate comedy track of Brahmanandam and Kovai Sarala is unnecessary. Technical Departments: Story - screenplay - Direction: The story basically is simple focusing on how marriages are wrecked because of inflated egos of the partners and how care and understanding helps to heal the cracks. The director has ensured that a serious storyline is combined with entertainment to avoid being preachy. The ending is apt with Kota drawing parallels to Aadi Danpatulu (Shiva and Parvathi) and how marriage survives despite individual weakness. The dialogues written by Madan for this film are very good. Especially the way he explains the difference between mistakes (tappu) and weaknesses (lopam) through the character of Kota.Screenplay of the film could have been better. Direction is adequate. The call centre comedy track in the beginning of the film is amusing. However, the pace of the film is rather slow limping towards the climax. Other departments: Dialogues by Madan dominate the technical departments. There are good comedy one-liners (Ali: Santakam adigithe velimudra vestara) and thought provoking ones (tappu-lopam). Music by Agashtya is adequate. Sirisiri Muvvalle is one of the good melodies in recent times. Cinematography is good. Production values by the new banner are adequate. Analysis: First half of the film is good but the pace slackens in the second half. It showcases Jagapati Babu’s brilliance as an actor all over again. The only unconvincing point in the film is that how a newly married couple living in the same house let their egos over-ride every other emotion that newly weds normally share. If you are convinced about this aspect, this film would be a good film to watch. There is entertainment and a message in the film. The success of the film depends on how the family crowds take to it. Film: Pellaina Kottalo Cast: Jagapathi Babu, Priyamani, Astha Singhal, Raju Sundaram, Venumadhav, Sunil, Jhansi, Krishna Bhagavan, Ali, Kota Srinivas Rao and others Music: Agasthya Cinematography: Surendar Reddy Story, screenplay, dialogues, produced and directed by: Madan Release Date: December 9, 2006 CBFC Rating: U What’s it about! It is all about newly wed couple and differences between in their marriage. Hari Krishna (Jagapathi Babu) is well established professional. He is in his thirties. His parents arrange marriage with a Call center executive Lakshmi (Priya Mani). Both of them like each other and get married. On the day of their first night, Hari is told by his friend (Krishna Bhagavan) that husband should have upper hand wife. So asks him not to relent to his wife easily. Lakshmi’s friend (Jhansi) advises her that she should not succumb to her husband on the first day. Misguided by their friends, their marriage doesn’t consummate and eventually they decide to separate. On the insistence of Hari’s grand parents, both of them want to participate in Dampatyavratam. Here the real romance between begins. How they put their differences and consummated their marriage is rest of the film. What’s hot! This is the maiden directorial film of writer Madan (of Aa Naluguru fame). He takes up all the major responsibilities in the film – writing, directing and producing. Despite many tasks, he comes out with a real winner. Pellaina Kottalo is a beautiful romantic entertainer. Madan has right sensibility to portray the romance between newly wed couple and simultaneously holding the viewer’s interest with right mix of comedy and beautiful visuals. Especially the dialogues in the film are fantastic and hilarious. One can’t stop laughing in the first half. Though the pace slackens in the second half, the film consistently entertains till the climax. On the surface of the film it looks a romantic entertainer but Madan has also raised several serious questions – on current day marriage system, male chauvinism, feminism and the clash between modern metro city values and the traditional system. But they are not tangible. Actually he sugarcoats them with romance and comedy. Even the picturisation of the songs is also innovative. Each song has its own concept. The best of them is the second song shot on Jagapathi Babu and Priyamani. Madan has used all the available material (music, camerawork, artists) to its best. But the pace towards the climax should have been better and Venumadhav comedy track is not necessary. Performances After long time, hero Jagapathi Babu looks handsome and very neat on the screen. There were apprehensions when the film was announced. Because everyone thought that Jagapathi Babu doing the role of a newly wed person is odd. But seeing the film, you can say he’s perfectly opt for the role. Newcomer Priyamani is the real scene-stealer. This dusky beauty has come out with sincere performance and she looks so cute. Her expressions and body language is perfectly sync with our culture. She has good screen presence. Apart from them, it is Krishna Bhagvan who makes the audience go in splits. His characterization is interesting. Jhansi is okay. Kota Srinivas Rao and the actor who played the grandmother role are good. Newcomer Astha Singhal as salsa dancer has done neat job. Kovai Sarala and Brahmanandam comedy track bring smiles. Sunil, Venumadhav and others are okay. Music by newcomer Agasthya is good on screen. Surender Reddy’s camera work and artwork stands out. Dialogues by Madan are major highlight. What’s not! The slow pace in the second half is minus point. Though it has good romantic drama, the conflict between hero and heroine are not that strong. Had the emotional conflict was strong as we have seen recently in Bommarillu, the film would have been very good film. Bottom-line! On the whole, Pellaina Kottalo is most pleasant romantic entertainer. It doesn’t bring headache like recent big budgeted films. The chemistry between Jagapathi Babu and Priyamani is good. Entertainment is there. So the family and youth audiences would love it. Madan has arrived as the director. The question is will it have good run at the Box-office? All we can say, they have released the film in wrong season with big budgeted films are lining up for this season. But word-of-mouth publicity will be in favor of this film. source: telugucinema.com MASS anthey Istham, BEZAWADA anthey Pranam |
