MUMBAI, Nov 3 (Reuters) - India imported 44 tonnes of gold in October, down 27 percent from the same month a year ago, the president of the Bombay Bullion Association said on Monday.
"Prices started falling only around mid-October, so demand was not very strong," Suresh Hundia told Reuters.

Gold for December delivery slumped $26.40, or 3.3%, to $778.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract has lost nearly $80 this week, or more than 9%, its biggest weekly percentage loss since at least 1984, according to FactSet Research.
Still gold coins are pricy.

It is better to buy physical gold rather than gold ETf if you are holding for more than one Year , i.e for long term
captial gains are taxed at higher rate on gold etf,
Buying gold mine stocks is just like buying any other stock of any company, it has double risk
if gold price falls or if the compnay has issues.
check the stock ABX for example

I am not sure about trading gold in europian markets. There should be some ETFs available to do that.
Here if you buy "GLD" ETF you can just trade like a stock. The company that maintains GLD will buy or sell the gold and hold it for you. And they will charge you some expense fee (likely < 0.5%)
And its as easy as buying/ selling a stock.

If buying just for investment, better to open Gold Pool account with Kitco.
There u pay the price of Gold and it will eb like ur bank acc or broker acc.
Whenever u sell it he can send money. if u wnat delievry u can pay teh additional 20 or 30 per ounce and get the physical metal
Gold is kidn of more liquid anture when compared to real estate. Its value hardly beats inflation. |

Dheeru, I am a Canadian citizen. I don't have an account with them. When I bought all they asked me is to show some ID and I gave them my DL. I am 100% sure you don't need an account with them. I have seen people from US buying here when they are here in person. What I don't know is whether it is possible to buy over phone. Even if it is possible, the delivery and insurance charges would make it cost prohibitive. Best bet is to buy through one of your friends in Canada, if any. I will ask the people at bank anyway but it would be tuesday next week at the earliest. The bank is located in downtown. I am off until tuesday.
I booked the flights to LAX between April 3rd and 8th. Could you suggest some decent hotels and also other places to visit. Would three days be enough for the two parks assuming that's off season? For hotels, I am thinking of Sheraton Park/Residence Inn/ Holiday Inn in that order. |

another thing to consider when you buy from scotia. they charge $10 per coin as making charges if it is maple leaf. there is no charge if it is a bar. I buy bars as the purity is same and objective is to pay as less as possible.
looks like today is not a bad day to buy. right now trading around $793. I don't rush and buy all at once. I would buy in smalll amounts. If you want to buy total say 3 ounces buy one today and look for a day like this. you always get an opportunity to buy at the price you want, if you are willing to wait. this way worked well for me when buying / selling stocks. never sold gold so far though. I think that weakness is inherent to all Indians, not willing to let go gold from our hands. |

web site's price do not change in real time. when you go to scotia bank's commercial desk, you will see the prices change every few minutes and displayed on electronic board. They display both BUY and SELL prices. SELL price is what you pay to buy gold. BUY price is what they pay when you want to sell. Normally there would be a spread and that's how bank makes money on the transaction. Scotia gives good price but I was told by one of my friend that Thomas Cook offers even better deal. I don't have experience with them.

sorry. no idea regarding the first part of your question. Each bar comes with a number. when you buy from a bank they will give a receipt that shows the amount you paid, # of the bar etc. When you want to sell it take it back with the receipt, you will get the money based on that day's sell price. |

dheeru, how far are you from Canadian border? only two countries (Canada and Switzerland) in the world produces 99.9999% pure gold coins and bars. Also the purity is guaranteed by respective govts. You get 99.95% purity in the US at best. Of course you can buy Canadian minted coins in the US. Normally buying it at a bank is always cheaper. Some of the "Thomas Cook" branches do sell coins. Their rates are competitive. I bought early this year from a Canadian Bank (Scotia Bank). |

mana SAM mama ee madyane vizag lo settle ayyadu. Nenu jan lo India vellinappudu Vizag visiting chesa. very nice place but the real estate is not that not cheap. I think you can buy a very nice 3 bed rm appt. with beach view probably for 50lakhs. |

Whats your take on real estate prices in Hyd? Do you see a slight fall or will they stay put for a little while? I am thinking of purchasing an apartment/house in Hyd. <<<<<

hyd is always the best considering there is no telangana separate state than vizag.
vizag lo kuda real estate prices already bhanae perigayi.
hyderabad is a hub for IT , financial, administrative for entire a.p so always a better choice .

Been very activein real estate for the past 2.5 years in Hyderabad and getting frustrated with the Administration and recent choas of 3024 acres, where one of my plot is involved. And see the Irrational Exuburance at its peak
Indian Stocks, cannot spend that much time..so still thinking abt it...But repent abt reliance 300 in 2003 now 2900 almost 10 fold increase..even gold does not match..
What about now in 2007 and future for gold?
Can you recommend any good sellers for the coins? |

Yes Gold has performed well when compared with the US dollar but if you look at investments in general, a lot of stocks too performed well since 2003.
Probably investing in India was a better option (be it real estate or stocks) during this period than purchasing gold.

Looking at the U.S and Indian Market conditions in Stock,RealEstate etc etc
Gold has been a very good investment since last 7 years. Dollar Devaluation saga to continue is it a good idea to hold gold coins like 10% to 20% or the popular among folks of 2 year expenses funda??
History prices I am associated in purchase are,
2003 September $345
2005 June $450
Today price is $828...This sector has performed very good compared to others...kani never concentrated on it...
NJ & Bay Area lo $1000 to $1200 velle chances unnayi in early 2009 antunnaru or earlier...and dollar to fall to Rs33 antunnaru...and ppl are agressively buying ard 10 coins......share your thoughts!!
