Yup. I think it rebounding well from 15.37. If it consolidates then I think it would be a good entry point. I am skeptic about buying it without consolidation.

SIGM (Sigma Designs) makes chipsets for High definition devices like Blu-Ray players and also for IPTV set top boxes. They have a huge market share as they are ahead of all their competitors in technology. But there is rumor that their competitors (BRCM) will catch up.

One more thing I want to make very clear. I am not a trader, basically long term investor. I do trade some times just for fun. I do not put more than $20k in trades at any given time, this depends purely on individual risk tolerance. My target is 15% annual rate of return on my investments and I will not take undue risks at the same time to reach that goal. |

Gaali mama,
I am trading in the following companies. Please do your own research and follow the companies very closely (those you want to trade). When I am trading I follow the price movement very closely and will get out quickly if needed. It's not easy for everyone when we have day job.
Suncor (SU): This stock is very highly correlated to Crude price, tend to trade along with it. Buy as close as possible to $60 and sell close to $70 (assuming there will be a short term correction in crude)
CNQ: Rationale same as above. Buy around $90 and sell around $105.
POT: This one I traded several times in the last year or so. Overall trend is UP. I bought at $80, $110, $130, $188 and sold at $96, $170 and recently at $204. I would buy on any down day and sell for 10% increase.
AGU: Same as above. Pick it on a down day and sell for 8 to 10% increase.
AGAIN, BE CAREFUL. TRY THESE ONLY IF YOU HAVE ABILITY TO FOLLOW THE PRICE MOVEMENT CLOSELY. ALSO YOU SHOULD SET A SELLING POINT (MENTALLY) ON DOWN SIDE TOO. You don't want to keep losers for long time. CAPITAL PRESERVATION SHOULD BE THE FIRST RULE IN INVESTING.
One more thing I strictly follow: Never leverage when you are trading i.e., never barrow money to trade. Where as Investing is a whole different game, I wouldn't mind leveraging for long term investing. |

Dividend paying stocks are always good. at least they will cover some losses. and in the long term they are better investments.

Are you talking about today's performance or overall since you started? If it is just today, I am down on 7 out of 12 stocks. I was talking overall. I am UP on 11 out of 12.
Don't worry, as long as you picked good companies it will work out over the long term. I am doing this for the last 10 years and it took me a while to get a grip of what the heck I want and how to do it. Key is to have an exit strategy, most of us accumulate losses in the beginning. If Pfizer doesn't have 7% dividend yeild I would have pulled the plug when it was down 15%. Ofcourse, dividend is one of the factors influenced my purchase in the first place. |

that's a big drop. maa TSX kooda last 30 mins lo -ve loki poyindi. oka time lo 150 points + lo unna index last lo 14 points padindi. overall ga not bad le compared you DOW and NASDAQ. my loss on PFE is now at 21%, damn. that's the only red in my portfolio overall. |

You have to be in the market but need to be very careful. If you are completely out, will miss out on big UP days. I didn't alter my portfolio too much in the last 4 to 5 years. with any new money I pick three or four stocks that I know best and comfortable with and just trade them. It is working well so far. |

There are two arguments on supply side of the equation. Bulls arguing with peak oil theory and bears arguing with recession, demand destruction, ample supplies etc... It took a while for the market to understand that the supply is not going increase like EIA's earlier prediction. Also there is another angle to this. If you look the rise in the price of the oil against a basket of global currencies, it doesn't look that bad. Due to the poor performance of the USD in which the crude price is denominated the rise looks so high. It's going to get worse before it get any better. Its not good for anyone but I think we reached a point of no return. Be prepared for lots of volatility in the markets. In the present scenario, its better to trade than invest with any new money. |

Year over Year, overall demand reduction in OECD countries is about 1.4% where as the demand increase in BRIC and middle east countries is about 4%. The supply side is stagnated for the last couple years. That's the biggest reason for crude's rise. there are several small factors like disruptions etc.. |

naa gut feel entante it will be much much higher than it is today in three to five years. reason entante they have the most number of new drugs in the pipeline compared to any other big pharma company. even if 20% of the new drugs click ayina they will do fine. also further downside protection dividend yeild is now about 6.8% |

I don't know what the fxxk is happening to Pfizer. Thats the only stock that is in RED among my holdings. I am thinking of adding but I hate averaging down and never did it before. Average up is OK with me but averaging on downside????? |

Presently I own only four US stocks with long term view. CSCO (up 16%), INTC (up 13%), PFE (down 18%) and MON (up 17%). |

For that reason I don't trade US stocks. I only buy them if I want to keep them long term i.e., 5 years at least. Where as I trade and invest in Canadian stocks. |

Majority of the Canadian stocks are listed in the US. It's not the same with US companies. To trade US securities there are two ways for canadians. 1) As you said open a USD tradnig account and do it. 2) Just trade in Canadian trading account. broker will automatically exchange the money and complete the transaction. when you sell that stock same thing happens with the currency exchange. the only flaw with this is you lose out on currency exchange every time you trade. typically you lose about 1% in exchange each time. Where as in option 1) you lose only first time (when you open the account and convert $Cdn to USD) and the last time when you want to close the account and convert the USD to Cdn. |

yeah,, thats the reason I bought EWC. BNS, ABX, CNQ, RIMM, POT, RY major holdings in this ETF. Bought it for $34.88////
BNS - Bank of Novascotia, I used to own this but exited at the right time (luck and some foresight)
Still a very good bank and probably well placed for growth.
ABX - Barrick gold corp, biggest gold company in the world. no problem with this as they are one of the lowest cost producer. I own AEM in this space and also XGD (canadian ETF)
CNQ - Canadian natural resources, I bought this 5 years ago and it split once already and going to split again some time soon. I am up 400% on this and still holding.
RIMM - Research in motion, blackberry maker. I wanted to buy this many times but chickened out, it looks expensive but great company. Never owned it and regret that.
POT - I followed this since it was trading in low 30s and finally bought at $80. Traded few times but also keeping some for longterm. The BEST in agri space.
RY - Royal bank, biggest canadian bank. Not a big fan and never owned it. |

correcte but one thing I learned over the last 10 years. It's impossible to time the market. if we are in for longterm (3 to 5 years) it's not bad. just to give you an example on timing issue, I bought POT in Jan during market meltdown and sold day before yesterday. I bought for $130 (it went down to $110 after two days) and it went up to $215 after the day I sold (i.e., yesterday). In retrospect, perfect scenerio would have been buying at $110 and selling at $215 but it's impossible to know upfront. I will buy it again if it goes to $180-$190 range. Luckily I sold only half of what I bought. |

The reason I did't include the canada ETF: Canadian stock market (TSX) is made up of approx. 30% financials, 30% energy and 30% materials. So if I already account for precious metals and energy in sector based ETFs and want to stay away from financials then no need to add Canada ETF. By the way, Canadian banks are in much better shape compared to the US banks. only two banks are affected by sub-prime mess and the stock prices are reflecting that. |

Just for fun, I would suggest a mix of the following ETFs, you please figure out the ticker symbols:
Agri based ETF (I think COW or MOO something like that)
BRIC countries (there is one with claymore and it's very good so far)
Gold producing companies or GLD itself.
Energy (oil & natural gas producing companies)
QQQQ
Just 20% in each of these. Stay away from financials. If you know an ETF on big pharma that include the likes of pfizer, merck etc.. you may add that as sixth to the above mix. |
