I wouldn't touch airlines. they are directly correlated to oil prices, so they are up little bit recently as oil came down from $146 to $120. overall the entire airline industry as a whole since inception never made profits. |

I traded POT twice in the last two weeks. If you are in for longterm say 3 years, then I would buy POT on one of the down days. It was $170 few days ago. But be prepared for vicious corrections, it may drop 10% in one day and go up by same % another day. Just as an ex., it came down 30% ($70) in just 3 to 4 weeks time. If you have stomach to withstand that kind of volatility then there is no problem with the company's fundamentals. |

last month lo commodities lost around 20%, while financial gain around 30-40%.??//
Commodities are in a secular bull market and 20% correction is not abnormal. In the past bull markets there are instances where they corrected 40%. Commodities corrected after gaining a lot in the last few years. If you are in for long term they are still a good play. Financials rallied for a week or so this month after losing any where between 50% to 95% from the 52 week highs. Look again where they are trending now. Financials may be good for a trade (I doubt even that) but I wouldn't put my money in any banks for investing yet. Banks went up today just because Merrill could complete a transaction of CDOs at 20 cents on a dollar. It's a terrible transaction but market noted the point that they could at least complete the transaction. Other banks could not do that in the past few weeks/months. So some think that the problems in financials are coming to an end.
But the problem with financials is that NO ONE knows the extent of exposure and NO ONE knows the real value of the crap they loaded on and off their balance sheets. On the other hand, the commodity producers are making real money and the earnings are strong and balance sheets are clean. I would rather take the risk (if at all) with the commodity producers than the producers of weapons of financial destruction (Buffet's words). |

looks like you are a beginner. my advise is take your time, try to learn basics first and PLEASE don't jump in without knowing what you are doing. good place to start is- pick a company (any company) and try to understand the balance sheet (you can get it from their quarterly results). |

first of all you have to figure out your time horizon, how much you can afford to lose etc.. One more thing I learned over the years, never ever buy in to any tips given by anyone. listen to all and do your own work and then decide. My overall portfolio weightings: Cash 15%, Energy 20%, base metals 20%, gold 10%, fertilizer producers 25% and tech 10%. Most of these I bought few years ago and once in a while I just readjust little bit.
I told in this DB before that I would not touch financials/banks for at least another 6 months. Let's see how it goes. |
