Lawrence Raghava, who made his debut as director with Mass gave a commercial entertainer. Many a time, the director claimed that style is the King. He said he has no belief in story, but the way how a story runs. His so-called Style in filmmaking didn’t work in this film – Don. He has absolutely messed up things. He not only confused the audience, but he himself got confused. But, one thing is clear: This movie sucks.
Synopsis
Suri (Nagarjuna) is a local don in Hyderabad. To put it straight, he is a don who does only good to society. An orphaned Raghava (Lawrence) is closely attached to Suri since his childhood and is considered as younger brother. A bad Don Stephen (Kelly Dorjee) becomes a land shark in Hyderabad and wants to keep his sway. Suri opposes his moves tooth and nail. Now, Stephen is desperate to kill Suri. The fight between the two takes many a twist and turn, before the good wins over the bad.
Performances
Nagarjuna has let down his big fan base and the general audiences too by selecting this seemingly wrong subject. There is no nativity in his Don getup and his entire footage sounds odd, driving itself to farfetched imagination. However, he looked handsome as usual in the romantic scenes with Anushka, who provides some relief with her comedy, that too with limited punch. Lawrence came out with highly exaggerated performance, which is loathsome to watch. It is only after his death on the screen, that Nag gets some footage in the second half. Kelly Dorjee who did the bad don is adequate.
Technical Details
Absolutely there is no story. Lawrence depended out and out on screenplay, cinematography and stylish stunts. Comedy is not given even minimum place. Though Lawrence tried his level best to give some humorous elements, it turned out to be a flop show all the way.Music by Lawrence is a letdown. It is highly ridiculous to encourage experiment in music for such a film with mafia backdrop. The background score is monotony and not situational. You have two songs Entandanga unnave… and Su Su Soori Anna…which have some appeal to count with, but not memorable.Cinematography by S. Gopal Reddy is an asset to the film. What who cares for that? Some of the scenes have the standards of a Hollywood flick. But, they too have little stamina to resurrect the film.The film is directly influenced by the mafia subject. Lawrence has more or less makes you recall some scenes from Big B’s Sarkar, Rajni’s Basha and some Hollywoode flicks. There is no originality at all.First half of the film is full with introduction scenes pertaining to the main characters. Second half is devoted to stunts. The climax comes like a bang, so abruptly that audiences curse Lawrence.
FC Verdict
It is a wrong project for Nag. In fact, Lawrence played the villain against the film. |

Suri (Nagarjuna) is good-natured don. He treats his aide Raghava (Lawrence) as his brother. International mafia don Stefan (Kelly Dorjy) eyes on Andhra Pradesh and looks for a foothold in the state. When Don opposes to be Stefan's man in AP, war ensues. The rest of the film is power struggle between two Dons.
Analysis
The last big movie of 2007 is here. DON, the most anticipated film of this season, unfortunately falls flat with its weak script. It starts off on a promising note, but after the interval it runs out of gas and ends up as a big disappointment. All style, no substance.
The main problem lies with its director Lawrence who handled all the departments from scripting, composing songs and choreographing them, acting in it and directing them. Here we get the new SV Krishna Reddy in the making? Lawrence who delivered blockbuster with Mass, this time has no proper script to hold the grip over the film, despite some of the scenes are brilliant. He appears in the film from first scene to the climax while Nagarjuna as Suri anna alias Don doesn't have much to do. The basis for power-struggle between two Dons - Nag and newcomer Kelly Dorjee is too thin.
Moreover, Nagarjuna looks pathetically bad. He never looked worse than this.
However, some scenes stand out..
1. Nagarjuna's introduction. It is one of the best scenes in the recent times.
2. When villain Kelly Dorjee comes to make an agreement with Nag.
Performances
Nagarjuna is the original style icon in Tollywood and he always charmed everyone with handsome looks. But in DON, his getup and intention to look like a real don doesn't go well with audiences. As an actor, he cakewalks through the character but somehow, whenever he played the character of mafia guy or killer (Neti Siddardha, Antham, etc), it boomeranged. Ageing is inevitable but a top hero like Nag should take care of it through make-up or other means.
It is Bollywood actor and Lara Dutta's boy friend Kelly Dorjee who steals the show. He looks handsome and his suaveness as international don is appropriate. He looks perfect foil to the lead hero. Lawrence as actor irritates and his dialogue delivery is awful. For the sake of audiences' health, he better should stick to direction than acting. Anushka urgently needs to check her gaining weight. Nikitha in her brief role is a surprise.
As per technical aspects, senior cameraman S Gopal Reddy shows he still has the verve to show differently and competed with any young cameraman. Of the songs composed by Lawrence, three are good.
Bottom-line
Don has style but lacks substance. Lack of entertainment and weak script mar the film. It is disappointment...
