Aug 16: Lavish in acclaim, stirring in tone and generous in praise, President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton lifted Indian spirits with their message on India's Golden Jubilee anniversary indicating the United States was ready to build a new chapter in its ties with India.
Besides confirming that he would be visiting India most likely in 1998, President Clinton described India as one of the most resilient and vibrant democracies which had preserved for one-fifth of humanity that most precious gift -- freedom.
``India is recognised as an influential voice in the world community and an example to people everywhere striving for human dignity and the right to determine their own future,'' Clinton said in a speech which, according to diplomats, contained some of the most graceful remarks ever by an American leader and the first indication in many years that the US wished to bury the past.
Clinton said India and US should frequently come together in common cause and emphasised that ``with the world growing closer with every passing day, we must work more closely than ever.'' He added that ``it befits two of the world's greatest democracies.''
Indicative of the agenda he has in mind for his visit to India, Clinton said cooperation between Washington and New Delhi was imperative to ``bring benefits of the world's economy for all our people, and to reduce the threats of weapons of mass destruction.''
Expectedly, the President, known to be a great history and biography buff, twice quoted from Pandit Nehru `Tryst with Destiny' speech while describing India's Independence as a ``pivotal event'' of the 20th century and calling Indians ``one of the world's great people.''
He described India as a ``strong modern state'' based on an ``ancient and rich civilisation,'' which over the years had built a thriving economy.
History buffs and students of Indo-US relations scrambled to see when a US President last made such effusive remarks about India, although the delight of Indian officials was tempered by the fact that it was a very special occasion.
Still, both Indian and US diplomats said they were surprised by the effulgence of the President's remarks and some claimed it only bore their theory that Clinton was primed to visit the region at the first available opportunity, ``particularly if there was something in it for him, possibly some history.''
