Ontari starring Gopichand and newbie Bhavana has a good screenplay and credible performances but the climax is a downer. It becomes a regular revenge story and becomes humdrum after a promising start.
Plot Vamsi has a big happy family with parents, siblings and their spouses. Into his life comes Bujji who he falls in love with and after some hurdles, she reciprocates. She is eve-teased by Ajay, who is the brother of Lal Mahankali, an influential rowdy. Vamsi saves her, earns her love but also earns the wrath of Mahankali and his gang.
Story, Screenplay and Direction The first half of Ontari is good. If viewed in entirety, then the direction and performances are good but the basic plot doesn't work out especially towards the end. The last one hour when the suspense is over and it turns into a seen-before revenge drama pulls the movie down. The screenplay is present day inserted with flashbacks throughout.
The unconventional characters and fates of the main leads are difficult to pull off, especially in this screenplay. It could have been a highly watchable, even enjoyable movie if the story was a little different post-break. The action sequences in the first half are good, while those in the second half get very repetitive. Background score and re-recording is good.
The scene where Bujji introduces Vamsi to his own family as her boyfriend, the family sequences and sprinkling of humor in the first half is good. The scene where Vamsi and Ali (playing a waiter) interact finishes off the suspense about Bujji and the movie takes a different road from there. Incidentally, a movie starring Vadde Naveen called 'Naa Oopiri' has a similar storyline.
Gopichand and BhavanaPerformances Gopichand has the movie on his shoulders, and does a good job portraying a slightly complex character. Bhavana debuts in Telugu, and she gives a credible performance. Ashish Vidyarthi and Ajay are convincing in negative roles. Rajeev Kanakala plays a brief but key role well.
Song and Dance Three of the songs including 'Ararey Yemadi' are good with nice picturizations.
Last Word Ontari starts off with much promise, but goes downhill towards the climax. It's difficult to carry off a theme and characters such as Ontari's, and the movie seems to walk on a tightrope once it gives way to predictability post-break.

What's it about!
Vamsi (Gopichand) has close-knit family. He falls in love with Bujji (Bhavana) at first sight. He plays a small trick that makes her to believe him as CBI officer and he finally makes her fall in his love. On other hand, a local rowdy Lal's (Ashishi Vidyaradhi) brother (Ajay) eyes on Bujji and tries to touch her body. Vamsi bashes him up. The insulted villain sketches a master plan that is fatal to Vamsi’s life. The rest of film is revenge drama.
Analysis
Gopichand has earned action hero image with successive hits. Ontari too deals the subject - revenge drama - that has scope for him to excel in that department. Although the plot is novel, it has not much room for entertainment and the narration is too dry to lift the spirits. Mixing revenge formulae with element of schizophrenic disease is laudable effort. A littler care on the narration and entertainment could have made the difference.
Gopichand's performance, Interval twist, excellent musical score by Manisharma and new heroine Bhavana are positive aspects, while slow-paced narration, the offbeat climax, weak technical skills and lack of entertainment are major hindrances.
Performances
Gopichand has shown two shades of his character perfectly. He does best in the revenge episodes. Newcomer Bhavana has cute face and has good acting skills. The lead pair's chemistry too is good. Rajeev Kanakala is a miscast because such characters make impact when cast with new faces. Ashishi Vidyardhi, Ajay and Supreet have done their job good.
There seems to be some technical glitches as the film has inconsistent lighting, many scenes are shot in out focus. Manisharma gives riveting music for the film and they also are picuterised neatly. Director B V Ramana should have gone for faster narration.
Bottom-line
Ontari has novel plotline for a revenge drama but the narration should have been better. Gopichand, music, heroine are its positive aspects. Lack of entertainment, technical glitches and slow paced narration are spoilers. On the whole, a very average flick.

Story:
The story runs in two parallel threads moving back &forth to flaskback and present
Flashback mode..
Vamsi(Gopichand)is the younger son of Mudhukrishna rao(Paruchuri Venkateswara rao)and he is a happy go lucky guy.He has two close friends Subbu(Sunil)and MLA Raghava(Rajeev Kanakala).One fine day Vamsi comes across a beautiful,innocent&too good girl Bujji(Bhavana)and falls in love with her at the first sight.He dupes her as a CBI officer and meets her daily in the name of interrogation.
Present mode..
Vamsi's family is hiding in a remote village on the bank of Godavari and Vamsi seeks revenge on Lal Mahankali(Asish Vidyardhi)and his gang.Vamsi also kills his own friend MLA Raghava(now minister Raghava) brutally on a road.Why this lover boy turned into a serial killer forms the rest of the story.

Heroine character is very good.Bhavana looks cute and performed well.
First half especially the love story is very interesting.
Cinematography(Sarvesh Murari) is good.Music (Manisarma)is Ok.
Dialogues(Marudhuri Raja,Bhasha sri)are good at parts(comic oneliners)
This is a pakka commercial film from the Eetaram films sans any social message and this is a much better film from director Ramana compared to his earlier films.
Sidelights:
The movie moves back and forth too many times.
First half is good as a perfect package of entertainment,love&action with enough suspense but the Second half is not upto the mark though it is fine in the climax.
Schizophrenic behavior of hero talking to the illusionistic charecter of heroine till the end may irk some sections of the audience and also they might be disappointed for the unhappy ending.
Public Talk: bane undhi.watch it for Gopichand
Industry Talk: Commercially successful movie.If the second half goes well with the masses it will reach the range of Lakshyam.
