Mulayam and Lalu are friends again
NEW DELHI: Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad, the estranged Yadav chieftains, have decided to bury the hatchet in what could emerge as a powerful political partnership in the north, ahead of elections.
The rapprochement was worked out earlier this week in the Capital after spadework by Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh who travelled with the railway minister to Chandigarh.
Though the two Yadavs, despite the commonality of social background and socialist moorings, have been allies only intermittently, equations between the two worsened over the years, with both trying to undercut each other on their respective turfs.
"They have decided not to work against each other," said a source familiar with the parleys leading up to the patch up.
The renewed tie-up is being seen as a win-win for both, even though their spheres of influence don't overlap. It can contribute to the de-escalation of tension between Congress and Samajwadi Party that is already underway and, possibly, hurt the prospect of the formation of a third front sort of political bloc ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year.
