thats not true. We have two airports side by side with same IATA code DEL and BOM.
bombay airport two airports kaadu technical ga okate.
Delhi lo kuda ide issue.
Nenu BOM and DEL airports dwara US ki travel chesanu.
BOM lo transit aite vaade bus lo lopale teesukostadu. DEL lo nenu international lone digindi Jet airways.. Akkade next flight catch chesam. So it is single airport only.
i searched for the same. its true we dont have two different airports. its same extended for international.

In HYD case it is too far. It is not feasible with current roads to keep them open. May be in future we need to open it up when we have Free way enabled and Chopper facilities become cheaper. |

People compare having two or three airports like in US/UK. Their purpose and handling of traffic will be in the range of 50 to 70 million passengers per year. We are not even at 10 million mark to have two airports.

It is ignored for same reasons like we have better altenatives like EWR and JFK. With current economic situation of NYC city and economic situation of wall st.. it takes another age to bring it back to some standards. |

1. prastutam vunna traffic and infrastruture ni two airports handle cheste finanicial disaster. Because it will not even make 50% each airport cost. Keeping double the staff at two locations is not finanically feasible.
I think total international departures per day is around 38 and 115 to 130 demestic departures and same number of arrivals. For this capacity it makes no sense to operate old one with half of traffic diverted into old airport.
2. connectivity between two airports is almost difficult.
3. new flight routes and connections and new airlines can not handle in that airport. No new player will come to start flights to this old airport.
4. Operating Begumpet airport for domestic small time carriers is not at all possible to handle ATC and Security and maintenance of the airport which runs in 100s of crores and the income they make out of small time airlines is paisas.
5. People compare having two or three airports like in US/UK. Their purpose and handling of traffic will be in the range of 50 to 70 million passengers per year. We are not even at 10 million mark to have two airports.
6. People think the do not have convinience of near by begumpet and city people. But they forget the big picture of outsiders and all corners of people's trouble to get in and out of begumpet airport.
7. Our Fcuked up.. corrupt.. inefficient.. labor union type .. AAI thives are no good to handle baggage and people smoothly like international travel. To overcome this we need private parnership. This is only possible with such new airports. With new security, people can feel safe about the baggage and screening issues we face in begumpet. They will be addressed to an extent.
Keeping all those factors and for structural growth, we must close this airport for another 5 years. For now we need to continue to use this for general aviation. Later we can reissue a new IATA code and start using i |

The Lufthansa flight LH752 from Frankfurt lands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad early on Sunday. It was the first commercial flight to touch down at the new airport

Hyderabad, March 22: As Lufthansa flight LH752 from Frankfurt touched down on a rain-washed tarmac at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad at 12.25 am on Sunday, smiles and cheers broke all bounds, for it marked the long-awaited start of commercial operations at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. As if to make up for the initial hiccups, the fully-lit airport was decked up like a bride to welcome its first-ever flight. The same aircraft was scheduled to depart at 2.30 am for Frankfurt, thus becoming the first commercial flight to take off from the airport.
As the villages surrounding it went to sleep, the airport was glowing in anticipation as people walked in to receive their friends and relatives who were arriving on the first flight. Others were there to give a warm send-off to their dear ones who were departing on the same plane. Local people from surrounding villages also came with their families to share the joy of the formal opening of the airport in their neighbourhood, which was marked by drumbeats and dances. The passengers and those who came to see them off were equally excited.
“We are going to talk about this airport everywhere we go,” said one passenger. “It is a huge airport with massive infrastructure. Never mind the travelling distance.” It was all hunky dory on the first night. There were colourful balloons hanging from the pillars, helpful security men and personnel to push trolleys for free. Many passengers and their relatives reached the airport four hours ahead just to have a feel of the place.
Ms V. Veena, Ms Rani and Mr Bose, scheduled to leave for Frankfurt by the first flight, said they did not feel that the travel time to the airport was too much. “We came from Dilsukhnagar and the drive took almost the same time as it used to take to go to Begumpet,” said Ms Veena. Ms Preethi Devi, who works with Satyam Computers in Boston, said she was excited to take the first flight. “It is a beautiful airport, not only well-manned but also well-lit,” she said. “The roads from the city to the airport are also well-laid.”
As the first flight rolled down the tarmac, airline officials, GMR group representatives and civil aviation officials congratulated each other. They also heaved a sigh of relief that things went off smoothly. Local people also cheered. “We are delighted that a Lufthansa aircraft landed first and will also take off from the new international airport,” said Mr Werner Heesen, director (South Asia) of Lufthansa. “The new airport symbolises India’s focus on improving infrastructure,” he added. “We are proud to share this moment with all who have contributed to building it.” |

I was wondering about the pace of work in AP, most of flyovers were completed very fast compared to bangalore, even International Airport, eventhough Bangalore airport work commenced yrs before Hyd airport...
