Despite these grim realities facing all Republican candidates, at the
Presidential level, the election could actually be close enough to produce
a high voter turnout. If there were ever an election in which ticket-splitting
could be attractive, this might be it. McCain made a career of offending
Congressional Republicans by battling their addiction to earmarks and
lobbyists, so Republican voters infuriated by their party’s betrayal of its
principles could decide to exempt him from their revenge on the misbehaving
Congressmen.
On the evidence, McCain has two Republican problems: he leads the party
that’s currently led by the unpopular Bush, and he’s been consistently rejected
by the Religious Right, which is a crucial component of the Republican base.
For McCain to be elected, he must win solidly among Independents, and
must get a Reagan-style vote from socially conservative Democrats.
His strengths include his record as an American patriot, a true hero, a survivor
of torture who rejected a Vietnamese offer of freedom because it didn’t
include officers who weren’t sons of admirals, and a Congressional maverick
who fights for what he believes—regardless of the views of his party’s elites
and major fundraisers. He has decades of experience on national security
and foreign policy. He’s the real deal—a politician who stands up for what he
thinks is right. That’s supposedly what most Americans have always wanted.
But McCain is up against the greatest spellbinding Democratic Presidential
orator since William Jennings Bryan. Most importantly, this charismatic
and utterly engaging young man is biracial, making him a sort of political
Tiger Woods. He has lived on Chicago’s South Side since leaving Harvard,
but he was raised by his white grandparents and attended elite interracial
schools. Obama came on the national scene with his electrifying speech
to the Democratic convention, and he has had a mesmerizing impact on
idealistic young people, drawing them into politics by the millions. His
campaign financing is a phenomenon, drawing astounding numbers of
donors through the Internet. To hundreds of millions of people in America
and abroad, his candidacy is an inspiring exercise in pushing America toward
true racial equality. He looks to be what America needs most—a unifier. He
is, at the minimum, the most attractive major party candidate since Reagan.
His biggest problem is what he has the least of—a resume showing considerable
political experience that includes significant legislative achievements. In sharp contrast to McCain, he’s promised to pick NAFTA treaty fights with
America’s two neighbors—and the US’s biggest trading partners outside
China. (He said that on his first day on the job he’d call up “The President
of Canada” to demand changes in NAFTA.) He’s opposed to the Colombia
Free Trade Agreement, but promises to talk to Hugo Chavez, who’s been a
big backer of the FARC Marxist rebels in Colombia—and to FARC’s other
hemisphere supporter, Castro.
Polls show the race between Obama and McCain a toss-up at this point. We
believe Obama is more likely to win, because he has proved to be the best
campaigner since Reagan, and the McCain campaign has been dogged with
feuds, missteps and resignations.
Obama’s war chest, his fundraising, and his organization remain nearoverwhelming
in comparison with McCain. Our money’s on Obama—who
has raised five times as much of it as McCain: if he’s as good a President as
he is a campaigner, then his lack of experience will not prove to have been a
problem.
Does it matter who wins the Presidential election, given that Democrats are
likely to dominate Congress the way they did before the 1994 wipeout?
Assuming, as is widely believed, there are no truly crucial challenges to
American security from other nations, then it wouldn’t make much difference,
and we would agree with those who say it’s time to give the Left a chance to
manage the economy, because the Right—in the form of Bush’s big-spending
Compassionate Conservatism—has been such a failure.
If, however, there are some crises ahead, then it’s clear that McCain has the
edge….
Provided his health holds out.
The downside of his being—by 25 years—the experienced candidate, is that
he’s lived 71 years and five of those involved deprivation and torture in a
Communist prison. Does he have the stamina to deliver four good years?
And the other major reservation: will he show more skill at putting together
a White House and national security team than he has in putting together a
winning campaign team? On the evidence, Obama is the superior manager.
So, as the polls suggest, it’s too close to call—this early. An Obama victory
would be a giant step forward for American nationbuilding, and a McCain victory would put into the White House a hero whose whole life has been
preparing him for the kind of leadership the nation would need if it faced
real external security challenges.
One thing is sure: the vast ideological divide between these two will make
the Nixon-McGovern race in 1972 look like a love-in. This should be a
deliciously entertaining contest.
According to The National Journal’s record of Senate votes, Obama is the
furthest Left member of the Senate, whereas McCain ranks as a Republican
moderate. That means their differences on domestic policy are also of
chasmic proportions.
The Farm Bill is a perfect example of the divide. Congress has overridden
Bush’s veto, with Obama for the bill and McCain opposed. This is
Washington at its worst, a gallimaufry of handouts, subsidies, and special
payoffs and protections that only looks acceptable when compared with
the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy—that consumes more than 40% of
the EU’s budget. Among the Farm Bill’s provisions: should prices of major
crops fall below last year’s lofty levels, Washington will pay farmers to offset
the declines. Bush fought for a $250,000 upper income limit for a farmer
to qualify for such handouts, but Obama’s side—the winners—insists on
a $750,000 cap. Obama supports the ethanol subsidies and tariffs against
Brazilian sugar-based ethanol, but McCain opposes them. Last year, cash crop
farmers, the group that gets the biggest payoffs in this Bill, was the sector of
American society that had the greatest growth in income. With corn at $6,
wheat at $8 and soybeans at $13, this year looks even better. If there were
ever a time to move farming back toward free market principles and away
from reliance on taxpayers, this would be it.
The only non-Americans on earth who rooted for the Farm Bill are the farmers
and Eurocrats who collectively profit from Europe’s Common Agricultural
Policy, which may be the only government farm welfare program that is
more indefensible than America’s. No wonder so many European bigwigs
are said to be thrilled about Obama’s prospects.
Nobody’s perfect. Looking at what these candidates have to offer, this looks
like a vintage year. The nation is offered its best choice of attractive candidates
in many years. An Obama win would be a feel-good result. A McCain win
would be a feel-safe result. As Warren Buffett has said, whoever wins, America
should be in good hands. |

1. she leads in the popular vote
2. how could DNC award the uncommitted delegates from MI to obama when obama took off his name from ballot. its illegimate. the better way is give the pledged delegates to hillary as per the vote in election whereas allowing the uncommitted delegates to chose whoever they like b/w hillary & obama... when 4 people were in contest and only name was on ballot.. how could they know what % of uncommitted votes were polled for obama.. he could have got anywhere b/w 1 - 45% no one knows...
3. clinton won more delegates in primaries in states where votes polled are 27 million
4. obama won more delegates in caucus where votes polled are 1 million and most of his delegate lead is from caucus...
5. each vote doesn't carry same weight... votes in AA congressional districts carries more weight than their thella counterparts in other congressional districts... so if obama wins few AA districts and clinton wins the rest of the state.. still she would be ahead only by 10 delegates because more delegates are awarded based on the votes in AA districts... |
