Gochesh: For your needs, you need to open NRE (Non resident repriatable) account. You can deposit only foreign currencies and no tax on interests or deposits or any gains through these depoists like shares and mutual fund's dividend and bonus. The funds can be converted to dollars without any issues.
No rupee deposits allowed.
For depositing Rupee checks like LIC bonus, land settelement or local checks for your earnings.. you can open NRO savings which is non-repriatable and taxable on interest and all Indian tax codes applied on it. It is like Domestic savings account for domestic funds for NRI.
Citi Bank provides a 10 year no fee NRE and NRO savings accounts with initial deposit of 500 each. Free demand draft issue to anywhere in country, free bill pay, easy service levels to change address and to get to some human banking officers in US and as well as in India. The service is better as I have been to both offices in US and India personally.
ICICI is nightmare now a days. I was one of the first 10000 customers of ICICI Bank Secunderabad in 2000. The service at that time used to be like on par with US standards.. now a days it is become like worst govt enterprise with so much red tapism and too many restrictions and too much difficulty to get proper service. The treat customers with atmost frustration if you are regular juntha.. if you are high networth and influencial... you can see manager or otherwise you end up arguing with front desk guy who have no clue of whatsoever happening. The body language and responses we get from these people are so low that even an City Bus conductor is better sometimes to answer with patience.
Even though I have a payroll, NRE and Demat shares account.. the guy is charging account fee for every quarter and he takes fee twice a year for unknown reasons for Demat.
I am not able to close the relationship with ICICI because of shares I am holding in ICICI Demat which are struck with long term hold. I want to move to another bank.. but the current rules for USA residents virtually nullify opening a new Demat account for trading and holding purpose.
In april 2008, I went to the Bank in Navketan Towers secunderabad which is second bank opened after Kairathabad.. the service is worst. Token system, Manager sits in some floor which u literally have no access to take up graviences and for everything a form need to be filled up and it will be sent to Mumbai and god knows the responses. The scrutinize more than US consulate does for change of addreess.
I must have dealt more than 1 crore so far since 2000 with this ICICI and I rate it one of the worst in service at present. Go with Citi Bank for NRE and Remittances SBI.
I dont know much about HDFC and other PS banks.
