In Indian conditions, they say, if you win the toss half the battle is won. - Scorecard Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni [Images] ensured that at the outset in the Mohali Test. The other half was a team effort. To give the home team their due, Indian outplayed Australia [Images] in every department of the game. India dismissed Australia for 195 runs on the fifth morning to register thumping 320-run victory. It was one of the heaviest defeats for the world champions and the biggest win for the hosts (not including innings wins). The visitors never remotely looked like the world's best team, a pedestal they have been perched at for eternity. The thrashing they received at Mohali was suggestive of the fact that they are no longer the dominant side they used to be. The point we are making is that Australian cricket is now entering a new phase (a rebuilding phase) and it will take at least a few more years for them to reassert their supremacy. Other teams can seize this opportunity for sure. Morning Session: 54 runs, 5 wickets, 18.4 overs The script had been written on day four and it was bound one (no scope for last minute changes). The first two hours of the movie (read last session on Day 4) was over and only the climax remained. Resuming at 141 for six, the Australians suffered a jolt on the last ball of the day's opening over when Zaheer Khan [Images] had a length ball that move in to rip the stumps of Brad Haddin (37). The batsman was yet to add to his overnight score. Khan was even more destructive in his next over-- Tuesday's third. The second ball found Cameron White's outside edge and the third cleaned up Brett Lee [Images]. Australia 144 for eight, having lost three quick wickets early on the fifth day with the addition of the just three runs. Michael Clarke [Images] (69) went on to complete his half century-- his fifth against India and his ninth in Tests. The 27-year-old relishes playing against India and this innings was yet another proof of that. However, on this occasion even he was aware that only the last rites remain and time could not be an impediment. On their part, Clarke and Mitchell Johnson (26) prolonged the end, delivering competent performances-- a 50-run partnership for the ninth wicket. But it only ensured ennui, the viewer's were not keen on any more histrionics but only wanted to see the end credits roll. Johnson's character understood the audience plight and offered a soft return catch to Amit Mishra. Peter Siddle proved to just a sidekick and Clarke, the last man standing, perished at last, caught by Sehwag of Mishra. India, on the other hand, was celebrating the one of the biggest blockbuster in their box office history. India lead the four-match series 1-0. The first Test in Bangalore ended in a draw. It was a match that was never out of India's control. After the tremendous work done over four days, they needed less than a session on the fifth morning to defeat Australia, sealing the Test by 320 runs, their biggest margin of victory in terms of runs ever. Zaheer Khan nipped out three wickets in the space of four deliveries when play started, and though Michael Clarke resisted with 69, it was always going to be a matter of when India would take a 1-0 series lead. In terms of runs, it was Australia's biggest loss to India since Melbourne, 1977. India had reduced Australia to 58 for 5 yesterday, but had to wait 84 runs for their next strike, after which proceedings resembled a bowling alley as Zaheer knocked over the lower order like nine pins. Zaheer was simply unplayable. He struck in the first over of the day, bowling Brad Haddin for 37 with a ripper. It pitched on a length, shaped back in, and took out the middle and off stumps. In his next over, Zaheer found himself on a hat-trick. A leaden-footed Cameron White went for a drive and edged to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Next ball, Brett Lee had no clue to one pitched fractionally shorter and had his stumps splayed. Three wickets had fallen for three runs. With nine men around the bat, Mitchell Johnson averted the hat-trick. Zaheer had slowly built up his momentum through the fourth day and struck gold on the fifth morning. He got the ball to move slightly away from the batsmen, and was very accurate. Ishant Sharma achieved movement both ways, evident when Clarke outside-edged towards slip - the ball didn't carry - and later inside-edged towards square leg. Perhaps significant with two Tests to play, Clarke shrugged off an indifferent tour with a fluent 69. On a pitch with good movement and against bowlers who were on song, he batted with focus and determination. He and Johnson, who batted well for his 26 before popping a return catch to Amit Mishra, added 50. Clarke had been the glue that held a poor Australian innings together, but he was last out when he clipped Mishra - who finished with seven on debut - to midwicket. As the fat lady sang and Punjabi bhangra filled the Mohali air, Dhoni - India's stand-in captain who rarely made a wrong call through the Test - led the charge towards the catcher, Virender Sehwag. Teams that have a habit of winning know how to seize the momentum and never let it go. Like Australia had done for the last decade and more, India did that very well in Mohali. They were, unquestionably, the superior side in this Test. First act , Then improve.. |

The margin of 320 runs is India's biggest victory in Test cricket (not counting innings victories). The Australians line up to congratulate the Indians as they troop off the ground. Dhoni's got a stump as a souvenir, but, seeing that Ganguly doesn't have one, he gives it to him. "Cant get better from an Indian bowling point of view - Bhajji starts it all, Ishant chimes in, Zaheer joins the party and now Mishra wants to wrap it up. Good all round performance," says Ravi. Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of selectors, high-fives each of the Indian players as they go into the dressing room. There's a particularly big one for Dhoni, who's been fantastic in this match. Fantastic with the bat, and in the field. Ponting: "Right from the first morning India were nice and aggressive. they took the momentum away from us early in the game. They thoroughly deserve their victory and congratulations to them ... We'll probably have a couple of days off after this, back to back matches are always hard. We'll fine-tune our skills before the next Test ... They're a very good bowling attack, their two seamers were terrific and they used the reverse swing well." Tendulkar is being given an award from the PCA for becoming the highest run-scorer in Test cricket. One more trophy for an overflowing cabinet. Sourav Ganguly also gets one for it being his final Test in Mohali. Dhoni: "We got the perfect start after winning the toss and we were up to the mark in all departments. It was a very good track to bat on. I think Mishra bowled really well after a perfect start from the fast bowlers. It was a perfect Test match for us ... A lot depended on how quickly we could get the reverse swing going for nothing much was happening with the new ball. We were able to reverse swing the ball from the 12th or teh 13th over and after that it became hard for the batsman. Dhoni is also the Man-of-the Match for his two aggressive half-centuries and for his captaincy. His had a terrific match. First act , Then improve.. |
