KAKINADA: For the past several decades, East Godavari district has had a reputation of making its choice emphatically clear and showing a marked distaste for ambiguity.
But that seems to have changed now with the entry of the Praja Rajyam Party, and the ensuing triangular contest in several Assembly segments have made predictions a dicey proposition.
The large turnout of women, as also of voters below 40 years of age, is expected to work to the advantage of the PRP. Clearly, this means incursions into Congress and TDP votebanks.
Indications are that out of the total 19 Assembly segments, the PRP will win eight, the Grand Alliance seven and the Congress four.
As for the parliamentary constituencies, the TDP is likely to take Rajahmundry, the PRP Kakinada and Congress Amalapuram.
As for the conduct of the elections, the political parties have apparently managed to keep going the flow of cash and liquor through long-established channels.
At some polling stations, persons were turned away despite furnishing proof of identity as their names were not listed. |

ELURU: Chances seem favourable for Telugu Desam party and it is likely to bag more seats in West Godavari district. Of the fifteen Assembly segments, the PRP is likely to be placed in third position.
Sources reveal that TDP is riding on the sucess of its money transfer scheme suggestion, anti-Government establishment of Congress party and lack of patronage for PRP.
The Telugu Desam party is likely to bag more seats in upland areas of the district including Kovvur, Gopalapuram, Polavaram and Chintalapudi. However the Congress can re-establish its hold in delta region of the district as there is no anti-Congress wave in the region.
Lack of leadership in various segments of the Praja Rajyam party and a pre-poll campaign that Chiranjeevi would vacate the Palacole seat even if he was elected from the segment have influenced the voters.
In Palacole, according to locals, Chiranjeevi may win with a negligible and narrow majority as Congress candidate Bangaru Usha Rani and TDP candidate Ch Satyanarayana Murthy have given a tough fight.
Despite the Election Commission’s strict vigil, it is alleged that money was distributed to lure voters here.
The voter turnout was more at polling booths yesterday.
Higher percent of 87.73 was recorded in Gopalapuram Assembly segment and the lowest of 72.65 was recorded in Eluru segment.
The district poll percentage stands at 83.94. Interestingly the poll percentage stands above 80 percent in all segments except in Eluru. |
