On Wednesday oil prices jumped almost 9% to settle at $45.38 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, up from Tuesday’s $41.65 price at settlement.

The rally came as investors waited on the Energy Department’s crude inventory report, which is expected to reflect a rise in U.S. oil stocks by 2.2 million barrels. Gasoline stocks are predicted to fall by 600,000 barrels, according to a Platts survey.

Oil prices are on the rise even in the face of poor economic news. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%, reaching a 12-year low, while homes sales fell 7.7%, according to the National Association of Realtors. Ford Motor Company (F: 1.7, -0.14, -7.61%), already struggling in the face of a down economy, reported a 48% drop in sales for February.

Also on the Nymex, reformulated gasoline for April delivery rose 6.22 cents to $1.3816 per gallon, while natural gas rose by 5.8 cents to $4.34 per 1,000 BTU’s. Heating oil was also on the rise, gaining 3.49 cents to reach $1.2145 per gallon.

In London on the ICE Futures exchange, Brent crude settled up by $2.42 to stand at $46.12 per gallon.

At the pump, the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was unchanged from the previous day, and stood at $1.93 per gallon. This is up from a month ago average of $1.88 per gallon.
