General Motors owes $9.55 mn to ArcelorMittal
Washington: The filing for bankruptcy by General Motors may have a major impact on the steel industry as the failed US auto giant owes four US integrated steelmakers nearly $35 million, including $9.55 million to Lakshmi Mittal owned ArcelorMittal.
Besides NRI steel czar Mittal's firm, GM owes to US Steel Corp, AK Steel Corp. and Severstal North America Inc., according to the automaker's filing with the Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York Monday.
But the impact of the 100-year-old automaker's filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection runs much deeper in steel than that figure indicates as the companies will have trouble getting all they are owed, American Metal Market, a leading source on the metals industry said.
GM filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, joining Chrysler LLC as the second of Detroit's Big Three automakers to file for federal protection from creditors.
Additionally, those companies and other North American steelmakers face the daunting task of dealing with the fallout of the financial woes of a huge portion of their customer base, AMM.com said.
"I don't really know how the industry is going to react to this," Keith E. Busse, chairman and chief executive officer of Steel Dynamics Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., was quoted as saying. "None of us has dealt with Government Motors before."
Thomas Danjczek, president of the Washington-based Steel Manufacturers Association, drew a parallel between what the steel industry went through in 2001 and the Big Three auto woes today.
"Similar issues included legacy costs, ratio of retirees to active employees, health-care costs, capacity utilization, transplant and foreign competition, union negotiation items, geographic factors and products," he said. "The big difference is the steel industry did not get tens of billions in bailout funds."

No effect of GM's bankruptcy on India operations
hennai: Even as its American parent General Motors (GM) has filed a bankruptcy petition, its Indian subsidiary GM India announced Monday that it remains unaffected.
GM has filed a bankruptcy petition under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.
According to GM India, the Indian operations do not form part of the bankruptcy proceedings filed in the US which is expected to be completed in two months' time.
Post restructuring GM will have less debt and operating cost, the statement issued by the company said.
Consequently, all GM India dealers, warranty and customer support services will remain unaffected and continue to function as normal.
Its countrywide dealership network and service centres will continue to do business as usual and customers can visit their local dealer for service and warranty coverage, while dealers will receive new vehicles and spare parts as usual.
"Our dealers will also continue to receive all our carlines, while our suppliers will continue to work with us to supply parts and components for our cars, which we will continue to build at our state-of-the-art Talegaon and Halol facilities, in the normal course of business. We have no intention to modify our product, brand or other business plans including new product launches, the all new Chevrolet Cruze from our mother plant in Halol and an all new Chevrolet mini car from our new state of the art plant at Talegaon," said Karl Slym, President and Managing Director, GM India.
"In its 14 years of established operations in this country, GM India has invested over Rs.5,000 crore to create a manufacturing capacity of 225,000 vehicles per annum. We are deeply committed to this market, our customers, suppliers, dealers and all other stakeholders," he added.

WASHINGTON - General Motors filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, brought down by years of missteps and lost opportunities that dragged an American industrial icon to its knees.
President Barack Obama said the federal government would act as a reluctant caretaker of what was once the world's largest automaker and vowed a well-managed GM would emerge swiftly from the bankruptcy process as a profitable company.
“I recognize the importance of a viable auto industry,” Obama said at a press conference at the White House following GM’s bankruptcy filing. He said a collapse of GM would have been “devastating” for the U.S. economy and added that the government-led bankruptcy plan was “tough but also fair.”
