ee review highlight Wow, how much we have in today's society, yet how much we are missing! This is a very simple story about the daily life of a nomadic family living in the Gobi desert and about a baby camel born to a mother in their herd of camels, who rejects the baby. It focuses on the family's struggle to get the mother to accept and nurture her new born. What impressed me was how much their lives made sense and how important and valued all member of the family were both young and old. They all worked together in a very close and intimate way. They did not have much but truly valued, cherished and nurtured what they did have. How different this is from our modern world. I found myself longing to live in the Gobi desert. The mother and grandmother were so involved with the children. No rushing off to soccer practice, PTA meetings, their activities focused on survival of the family, tending to their animals, fixing the meals, playing with the children. There was so much love and caring apparent from human to human as well as human to animal. To me it was a depiction of what life and family really should be and a sharp contrast to what we have lost in our civilized, overbooked, and stressed lives today. |

"...Weeping Camel" is not about camels so much as it is about parent/child relationships. And it is unbelievably touching. The extended family that the film follows throughout the birthing season of their herd of camels are so hardworking, fascinating and genuine that you don't want to leave them at the film's conclusion. The footage is edited so well that you sometimes forget that you're watching real people go about their daily lives, not actors following a script. "Weeping Camel" is flows with a seamless serenity, sans narration. Once again, the editing is so flawless that one doesn't really even need the subtitles to understand the film. The images tell the story quite sufficiently. It isn't often that I have the urge to watch a film twice right away, but that's exactly what I did. Highly recommended. |

I strongly recommend this film. It isn't everyone's cup of tea but for those who can appreciate how others in the world live and their customs, this film can't be ignored. It was sad, smart and rewarding. I broke down like a baby at the end when she sang to the camel. The song was beautiful - the intent and purpose behind the song was heroic. This movie proves that we all struggle with life sometimes but with a little attention and genuine affection we can overcome. Sounds corny but after you've seen the film I'm sure you would agree. |

What a beautiful movie! It proves the great power that music has on living things. Everyone should watch this movie, especially with children, to enlighten them on how life can be simple and beautiful at the same time |

Not quite a documentary, not quite a fable, this simple story of a Mongolian family trying to reconcile a mother camel to its rare white calf is simple and soothing as a lullaby. The viewer feels like a welcome guest in these peoples’ lives. Strikes a chord in those of us sometimes overwhelmed by the complexities of the modern technocracy – it distills life to its most elemental and reminds us that nurturance is a necessary part of survival. Some needs are universal no matter how alien the culture (or species, it seems). Beautiful interior and exterior cinematography. Avoids saccharine anthropomorism. |

This is one of the best movies that I have seen this year. I felt that I was given a priviledged look into the Mongolian culture. I was struck how their sense of family and community came across in the film. I also have a more sympatheic view of camels then I had before.. Excellent movie. |

You have to go into this movie with the right attitude. There is little plot, and little action. But the scenery is beautiful, the animals are wondrous, and the depiction of the lifestyle of these indigenous residents of Mongolia is fascinating to modern, technology obsessed individuals such as myself. If you want a quiet, thoughtful evening in which you are transported to a fascinating foreign culture, then this is likely to be a good choice for you. If you are in the mood for another Godfather movie, you might want to put this one aside for another evening. Inside the genre in which it is working, however, this beautifully made film is among the best of its kind. There is just no way to overstate how charming these camels can be when the camera zooms in for a nice closeup. |

This movie was a very pleasant surprise for me. I figured, well it's nominated for an Oscar so it must be worth a look. Is it ever! What do you need to make your life enjoyable? When you watch this you find that you don't need much at all. We see four generations of a family who love and respect each other. We see children from a simple background exposed to TV for the first time. We see their reaction to a dancing class in town. We see them travel long distances in search of their necessities. We see some cultural "magic" performed. All of this is seen in the context of the daily life of this family. This movie gives the term "life's simple pleasures" a new meaning. Or maybe it just reiterates the real meaning. And it's a beautiful movie to look at. |
