For the curious, yes, Banam is among Tollywood's better attempts at staying off the beaten and bloodied track. And if 'parallel cinema' sounds like an insult to you, then there's nothing that you should fight at the ticket counters for. |

Well, at least they've aspired for classy. Which is about it. Nara Rohit's no-frills launch attempts a full-frontal cerebral assault, but it uses a boat that's travelling with stowaway holes on its deck. The end result, then, is a leaky group discussion on Naxalism, the police force and goondaism.
The story revolves around Bhagat (Rohit), who's in his prime of youth, all set to take the civil service exams and become a sturdy-chested policeman. He's just reunited with his ex-Naxalite father Panigrahi (Sayaji Shinde), away from whom he has grown up all these years. Panigrahi is a combat veteran who's just surrendered to the police - all by himself, mind you, and not because of the bribe the government was offering him. Panigrahi, it is stressed, is a nice, loving, respected guy who was in the revolution for the good of society.
Going by the photos of Bhagat Singh and Che Guevara on the walls, Bhagat has ideals, too - only, he wants to implement them all in uniform. This apparently creates some discomfort in papa, but he grudgingly accepts the fact.
Bhagat runs into a helpless young bride Lakshmi (Vedika) who's in such a royal mess over her dowry, the sudden death of her father, and her in-laws' stunning cruelty, that he takes her home. The romance builds slowly, but surely.
The innocent white-washed damsel spells nothing but trouble for our man, who is now in conflict with a semi-menacing, J D Chakravarthy-esque, Trishul-worshipping villain Shakti (Randhir). Shakti's geographical associations are not to be missed - he's Shakti Patnaik, and his oily assistant is Sahu. The rest of the story is about how Bhagat's struggle goes on relentless of how many kicks he has to deliver.
Banam is a subtle flick with a visible youngish hand behind the scenes. There are smart pithy lines here and there, and some impressive directorial details at places, too. The problem is that the movie is quite vague in its issues, and chooses just to label them with sub-headings, instead of ever bothering to detail the solution, or even the problem.
Panigrahi's conflict with Bhagat's convictions, and vice versa, are bafflingly left unexplored. And lofty ideals of cleaning up the system are executed merely by bashing up a few goondas.
What's refreshing is that this is a bare-bones display of Nara Rohit the hero - not Nara Rohit the dancer, Nara Rohit the woman-wooer, Nara Rohit the gaali-spewer, or Nara Rohit the gut-spiller. And the man is in no way undeserving of his spot in the sunshine. He has screen presence, and oozes a certain testosterone confidence that no amount of big-banner-shrill-showmanship can duplicate.
The heroine is pretty, though she's overshadowed by the voice that's dubbing for her. Sayaji Shinde is a treat to watch on screen, as is Rajeev Kanakala.
The stunning background score adds weight to the narrative - there's some old-world charm in the music. The visuals reflect an obvious attention to detail, and they're almost art-house in their starkness.
For the curious, yes, Banam is among Tollywood's better attempts at staying off the beaten and bloodied track. And if 'parallel cinema' sounds like an insult to you, then there's nothing that you should fight at the ticket counters for. |

The Beginning of the caste system
There are different theories about the establishment of the caste system. There are religious-mystical theories. There are biological theories. And there are socio-historical theories.
The religious theories explain how the four Varnas were founded, but they do not explain how the Jats in each Varna or the untouchables were founded. According the Rig Veda, the ancient Hindu book, the primal man - Purush - destroyed himself to create a human society. The different Varnas were created from different parts of his body. The Brahmans were created from his head; the Kshatrias from his hands; the Vaishias from his thighs and the Sudras from his feet. The Varna hierarchy is determined by the descending order of the different organs from which the Varnas were created. Other religious theory claims that the Varnas were created from the body organs of Brahma, who is the creator of the world.
The biological theory claims that all existing things, animated and unanimated, inherent three qualities in different apportionment. Sattva qualities include wisdom, intelligence, honesty, goodness and other positive qualities. Rajas include qualities like passion, pride, valour and other passionate qualities. Tamas qualities include dullness, stupidity, lack of creativity and other negative qualities. People with different doses of these inherent qualities adopted different types of occupation.
According to this theory the Brahmans inherent Sattva qualities. Kshatrias and Vaisias inherent Rajas qualities. And the Sudras inherent Tamas qualities.
Like human beings, food also inherents different dosage of these qualities and it affects its eater's intelligence. The Brahmans and the Vaisias have Sattvic diet which includes fruits, milk, honey, roots and vegetables. Most of the meats are considered to have Tamasic qualities. Many Sudra communities eat different kinds of meat (but not beef) and other Tamasic food. But the Kshatrias who had Rajasic diet eat some kinds of meat like deer meat which is considered to have Rajasic qualities. Many Marathas who claim to be Kshatrias eat mutton. The drawback of this theory is that in different parts of India the same food was sometimes qualified to have different dosage of inherent qualities. For example there were Brahmans who eat meat which is considered Tamasic food.

Yet another youngster tries his luck in Tollywood. This time he is not from the film fraternity but politics. Nara Rohith is the son of Ramamurthy Naidu, brother of the TDP boss Chandra Babu Naidu. Let us see how far Rohith has managed to impress with his debut film.
Story:
Bhagat (Nara Rohith) grows up as an orphan. He has lost his mother in his childhood. He loves his father very much. While he is still young his father Sayaji Shinde, who is a naxalite is presumed dead after he jumps into a river after being cornered by the police. Bhagat is preparing for civils and he wants to become an IPS officer.
Bhagat’s father returns home one day. He has surrendered to the police and now wants to lead the life as an ordinary citizen. Bhagat meets Subbalakshmi (Vedika) at the railway station. She is just married but as her father is unable to arrange the agreed dowry, her husband and in laws leaver her at the station asking her to go back to her father’s house.
Bhagat brings her home and tries to sort out her problem. But Subbalakshmi’s in laws and husband refuse to take her back. She removes her mangalasutra and severs her ties with them.
An evil guy Shakthi (Ranadhir) is a local don and he has the entire police force on his pay roll. The efforts of a sincere police officer Rajiv Kanakala to put an end to his atrocities prove futile. Bhagat invites the wrath of Shakthi after he kills his aide and bashes up some of his gangsters.
Shakthi bashes up Bhagat while he is on his way to join training at the police academy. Sayaji Shinde is furious and he tries to kill Shakthi but is killed by the gangster. The rest of the film is how Bhagat takes the help of the top brass of the police and manages to put and end to the atrocities of Shakthi.
Performance:
Nara Rohith makes his debut and he does a good job. The director gives him an easy script and it does not fully test his acting skills. However Rohith has a good screen presence and he is sure to make a mark in his forthcoming films.
Vedika plays a simple village girl and she is adequate in her role. Her innocence adds to her charm.
Sayaji Shinde plays a naxal and he carries his role with dignity. He is impressive even though his role in short. Rajiv Kanakala also does a near job. Ranadhir, the villain does not get a chance to show too much of his cruelty.
The music is average and the screenplay is dull. The slow pace of the movie is a definite minus. The director has tried to make a different film but the lack of commercial elements like big action, comedy, sentiment and romance etc. make the film dull.
The film does not hold much interest to the youth and there is also nothing much for the family audience. Even the back benchers are disappointed as the hero plays a rather subdued role for most part of the film.
The film will now need strong word of mouth publicity to make some impact at the box office. |

Just now watched the movie at SRI MAYURI (HYD)
First things first movie is not a entertainer... it is a serious and meaningful movie
no dances, comedy, or mass dialogues but still it appeals
it is a visual treat, technically very superior, it has refreshing feel
the main asset is STRONG SCREEN PRESENCE OF ROHIT, chala confident and cool ga chesadu
his voice has good base... underplay type character, he just stuck with basics, no camera shyness
there is no trace of novice, he acted like a establised hero, off course his character was made very well
heroine, villain, shaji shinde characters also have equal footage to that of the hero
costumes of hero and heroine are very decent
story is about a person who believes in himself and the system, he aims to become police officer
not for the power or money but with a desire change the system,,, the movie brings back the respect on uniform and smile on a policeman
chaitanya's direction is quite good and songs are well picturized
production values are good
-ve point is lack of commercial elements
+ve genuine attempt to give a good cinema
i saw rohit at the theater,, he is just too handsome friends,
lot of hungama was done at theater, fire crackers and slogans was the order of the day
tv-5, zee telugu, studio-N covered the proceedings
overall movie will make its mark esp the multiplex audience, good job

Story
banam The story of the movie happens in the year of 1989. Bhagat Panigrahi (Nara Rohit) is a son of ex-maoist Chandra Sekhar Panigrahi (Sayaji Shinde). He is a man of principles and he always thinks about solutions within the system. His goal is to become an IPS officer. Sakthi Sahu (Ranadhir) is a dreadful mafia guy in the same area. They cross each other's path in an incident. It becomes a personal issue for Sakthi. But Bhagat treats it as a failure of system. The rest of the story is about how he corrects the issue while becoming the IPS officer.
Artists Performance
banam Nara Rohit delivers what is needed for the character. His voice is an asset. He looks pretty good in close up shots. He has got adequate screen presence. He need to shed a little more weight look leaner on the screen. He also need to acquire flexibility in his body language. At this juncture, Nara Rohit seems to be perfect fit for author backed roles. Vedika did the role of a traditional Brahmin girl and she is apt. Sunitha dubbed her voice. Ranadhir is perfect as the villain. Sayaji Shinde gets another noteworthy character in this movie after Arundhati film. This movie sports mostly new faces and all of them did well.

banamStory - screenplay - directon: Story of the movie is about how a righteous guy tries to be morally correct while wiping out the evil forces in the society by adhering the rules and regulations of the system. Chaitanya Dantuluri makes a honest and sincere attempt to narrate the story without deviating from the content. He was able to present whatever he wanted to tell in a clear and lucid manner. The way he has avoided showing action sequences in a couple of fights in the first half is very creative. Screenplay of the movie is nice. And this movie reflects realism. However, I expected a better narration in the movie after hero employs four officers. He should have shown how these four officers eliminated faults in the system in more effective way. Nonetheless, Chaitanya Dantuluri should be commended for making a honest movie without falling prey to the so-called commercial elements. Watching Baanam is like watching one of those Vishal Bharadwaj's realistic Hindi movies. The director also devised the movie into three chapters (Quentin Tarantino style).
banam Other departments: Mani Sharma gave apt songs in the movie. They are like a part of the background music. In my opinion, the background music given by Mani Sharma for Baanam is the best in his career. It infused life into the movie. Cinematography Anil Bhandari is excellent. The framing and execution of camera is very untypical of regular Telugu cinema. Dialogues by Nagarju Gandham are seamlessly integrated into the script. No dialogues are written just for the heck of it. Editing by Marthand K Vanekatesh is crisp and the movie's runtime is around 2 hours. Art direction is nice and fights are realistic. The locations are good in the movie. Seshu Priyanka Chalasani should be appreciated for coming forward to make a movie that has no typical commercial elements. These kind of films work only if the content is good in the final product. And it is highly difficult to judge if a new director could pull it off at the time of script approval. It is nice to see Vyjayanthi banner that is known for commercial films is trying to enter the futuristic arena by producing realistic films..
banam Analysis: I can't divide this movie into first half and second half to tell how it is. The entire movie is realistic and honest. It is a well handled movie with technical work complimenting the content. I feel that director could have devised a better way of showing pre-climax (cleaning/correcting the system) with more mind play so that it would take the graph of the emotions to the peak. There are also little bit of slowness in the film regarding heroine's thread. The plus points are honest direction, brilliant music and nice camera work. After Gamyam movie, I have seen another honest and path breaking movie. Let's hope that the audience will also like it and make it a hit. Success of films like these will infuse novelty and honesty in Telugu filmmaking standards. Otherwise, we end up watching the same formulaic films dished out mercilessly week after the week.

Debutant director Chaitanya Dantuluri uses a fresh face to tell the story set in 1989. Nara Rohit plays the intelligent, level-headed son of a naxalite Sayaji Shinde who aspires to become a police officer. The film is not a poignant or a heart-breaking story, the narration throws up the steely reserve of a young man who surrounds himself in a positive atmosphere, never giving away his confidence, calm, strength and loves the people around him for what they are be it his father whom he refers to is a better person than him or a damsel in distress whom he rescues and becomes her guardian.
He wants to follow the system, the law methodically and is rattled only when disturbed. His father who gives up naxalism, picks up a weapon again for the son and dies.
Sayaji Shinde and Rohit as father and son share a very flexible, affectionate, understanding relationship. Vedika lends all the innocence required for the character, is very slim and confines herself to the limitations of the role assigned to her. Rohit definitely has a screen presence shows an intensity and toughness required to be a hero and chooses a film that does not quite show his virtuosity as an actor.
The film has it's limitations, it begins well, builds up seriousness in between but doesn't throw the excitement or punch required towards the end of the film. The hero asks Bhanuchander for a few training officers to set a villain and his surrounding system right but the aura and interest he carefully nurtured from the beginning of the film doesn't sustain post-interval and the film slows a bit.
The director has chosen a sensible subject, with a little more gravitas in the dialogues and focus on the hero the movie would have made a tremendous impact. Rohit is shown as being calm and composed right but even in the scenes where he and his men beat the pulp of the villain who is considered as a problem to the society, he falls short of showing an angry expression. The setting, background, music, characters are in sync with the story, technically convincing too.
There are no loud dialogues that show the conflict between the father and son in their ideologies. Chaitanya is promising as a director, succeeds in conveying a detached seriousness and winds up the film intelligently within a time. As far as the hero is concerned, it's a safe debut but the real test begins when he'll have to smile, joke, and run around trees to be a certified Telugu film hero. |
