Rebels may rock Cong in coastal AP
Vijayawada: The decision of the Congress to field fresh faces in three coastal districts of Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam appears to have boomeranged as some rebels have decided to give sleepless nights to the official candidates.
The official candidates may face rebels in three to four segments in each district. Brahmin leader Sistla Ramesh of Gudivada has already announced that he would be filing his nomination on April 1, while Bommasani Subbarao of Mailavaram and Jaleel Khan of Vijayawada (West) are seriously contemplating of contesting the polls as independents.
Ramesh was upset with the high command after failing to accommodate his wife Vijayabharathi from Vijayawada Central segment in spite of support extended by minister Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao and local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal. This seat was given to CM’s loyalist Malladi Vishnu, also a Bramhin. The efforts of Pinnamaneni, who is contesting from Gudivada to pacify Ramesh, have not yielded results. Sources said Bommasani has decided to go ahead with his plans and enter the fray against party nominee Appasani Sandeep.
In Prakasam, sitting MLA from Kanigiri Irigineni Tirupathi Naidu has announced that he would contest as an independent after the party had denied him the ticket. Youth Congress leader M U Reddy was nominated from Kanigiri. Former MLAs S Pitchi Reddy (Darsi) annd Y Venkata Reddy (Giddalur) are also busy consulting their followers to contest the elections as rebel candidates.
The situation in Guntur is also no different what with several distressed aspirants chalking out plans to enter the fray as independents. The Congress leaders from Pedakurapadu, the erstwhile stronghold of minister Kanna Lakshminarayana, are mulling of quitting the party.
Former governor Kona Prabhakar Rao’s son Raghupathi is entering the fray as an independent from Bapatla after his unsuccessful effort to get the party’s nod. The Congress retained senior leader Gade Venkata Reddy from Bapatla in spite of Pranab Mukherjee batting for Raghupathi, it is learnt.
Meanwhile, the senior leaders fear that the party, which is facing serious problems due to the exodus of a large number of Kapu voters to Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam, could be in a quandary if the rebels stick to their guns and contest against the official candidates.
