Are you serious? You want to make this personal? ipad had its glory days! They came up with the concept and I am glad they did, but then they took it too far by trying to exert control over how its device users use what they have paid for. That annoys me more than anything about apple! Not to mention that the ipad was officially launched in India today!

The locked down (read: Stable & Fast) iPad/iPhone/iPod is what 90% of the users want and approaches the limit of their technical abilities in using the product. If you're a geek who wants more, you obviously know its limitations before hand and buy it with intentions of modding it.

Uh huh. So you prefer to be given a device which has the capability for more but don't push it to its full extent only because it "may" not live upto its expectation? Block flash, like go out of the way to block flash because you are scared it will brain the battery! I think a user is smart enough to limit the amount of flash content he watches if it reduces performance. Why block the plugin? Then choose what app people can install on it!? Really? I mean I did pay for the device right? Then why can't I choose to get what application I want on it. I will not allow My. Jobs or for that fact anyone else tell me how to use my gadget for which I have shelled out hard earned cash! Label me a geek/nerd for that, I will survive.

I was initially very averse to Apple, their products and their attitude. I was looking for a Zune HD but it wasn't available anywhere in India so I was forced to buy an iPod touch. Only after I bought it did I realize how advanced the homebrew and modding community is. It blows away everything on Symbian and even Android. The MobileSubstrate framework and Cydia result in a very high quality of unofficial mods & apps that cannot be reproduced easily on other platforms that aren't as consistent to begin with. I immediately junked my Nokia and bought an iPhone 4 and customized it exactly how I want it. It's overall the best device I have ever owned or even seen.
If you've used it for any substantial period of time it's apparent that Flash isn't even required. Almost every website works perfectly and embedded videos in every page directly play in the browser when you tap them. There is simply no need for Flash. I know how bloody laggy flash was on my Nokia and how slow it is on the N8 as well. The moment you scroll the page and 1 pixel of a Flash object comes into view the damn thing freezes. I DO NOT WANT FLASH ON MY IPHONE!

You purchased an iphone in India? You ought to be loaded and there is absolutely no point in having this conversation because to you, the device is not so much on functionality as much as a status symbol for the price tag. I think for about 20k Rs lesser you could have got the Galaxy S, which is equally good if not better! plus AFAIK flash doesn't freeze stuff on my galaxy! I am an HTML5 developer, and from where I stand it has a long way to go. Apple is pretty much banking on HTML5 canvas to beat flash and honest to god it doesn't have the best performance when it comes to running on low power devices... I may be wrong but HTML5 has a lot of catching up to do b4 it can even be considered seriously to compete against flash!

No I picked up a 32GB model in Singapore for just 6k more than a Galaxy S. At that price its a no-brainer for a faster device which gets day one updates, has much better developer support and a vastly superior display. The pentile matrix garbage that the Galaxy S has for a screen is downright awful. You can literally see black dots between each pixel since it has 33% less subpixels. Pentile matrix doesn't look that bad on the Nexus One because of the smaller screen size, but it's utter shit on a 4" screen.
Only today did I realize why it costs considerably more. The iPhone 4 does 18Mbps on Airtel 3G (which launched today in Chennai!!). Most other high end phones don't do more than 6-7Mbps and cheaper phones don't even do 3Mbps. To put things in perspective a 3.6Mbps USB modem costs 3.5k and a 22Mbps USB modem costs 15k!!

And Flash... I cannot even think of one website that I visit that uses a Flash interface. I ABHORR sites that have annoying Flash interfaces. Flash is almost always for embedded videos, which play fine on iOS on practically every website. HTML 5 is also irrelevant as it's only the Video tag that is ever so useful to let embedded videos play. |
