Telangana stirs hospitals to set sights on Vijayawada http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-03-24/india/29182550_1_corporat e-hospitals-private-hospitals-200-bed-hospital VIJAYAWADA: Realising that the ongoing Telangana agitation could affect them, corporate hospitals are eyeing Vijayawada -- the heart of coastal region -- big time. While Kamineni, Apollo and Yashoda hospitals have initiated plans, L V Prasad Eye Institute has already launched its operations. Sources said several other corporate and private hospitals are also likely to enter the market once the air connectivity to Gannavaram airport improves. While some of the major hospital groups opened outfits in the port city of Visakhapatnam in the past, the groups have included Vijayawada in their expansion schemes. More than a dozen 100-bed corporate hospitals are coming up in and around Vijayawada. While works on more than six super-speciality hospitals are in progress, some groups are giving final touches to their blueprints. "Vijayawada has not been on the big private hospitals' agenda. New multi-speciality hospitals will benefit patients from coastal districts like Guntur, Prakasam, West and East Godavari," felt former IMA president G Samaram. Top groups like Kamineni, Yashoda, Care and Sunshine have filed project proposals with the district authorities for approval, sources said. "We are coming up with a 450-bed hospital with all specialities," confirmed Care Hospital manager P Ravi. Care had launched its operations in the past in collaboration with Pinnamaneni Hospitals but closed down. Sources said the Care group acquired 200 acres near Ramavarappadu on the outskirts of the city and was planning to launch preliminary services by May-end. Kamineni Hospitals is all set to launch a 200-bed hospital near Kanur close to the city. The building works are in progress. "The T-agitation has forced the corporate hospitals to enter Vijayawada which hitherto is a neglected market," said former minister Vasantha Nageswara Rao. Chintamaneni Suresh, who originally brought the first corporate hospital with Soumya Appollo a decade ago, is again coming up with another venture with a 200-bed hospital at Nidamanuru. Another corporate group, Boppana Hospitals, is constructing a 200-bed super-speiality near Poranki. Sources said Yashoda is actively considering opening a cancer institute shortly. "Some NRIs from coastal region got together and are planning to open a mega hospital near Vinayak theatre," confirmed V Raju, a medical officer with a corporate hospital. The city branch of L V Prasad Eye Institute at Tadigadapa is likely to launch its full-fledged operations very shortly. Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), which launched its operations recently, is fast expanding its bed strength to compete with others. But why are the private hospital managements suddenly flocking to Vijayawada? "It is a known fact that the corporate hospitals in Hyderabad get good revenues from cash-rich patients of coastal region. With continued agitations and disturbed environment in Hyderabad, the managements redesigned their plans and set their eyes on Vijayawada," Bhashyam Ravinder, a health expert, observed. "Once air connectivity improves, the hospitals could rope in more specialists to Vijayawada," he felt. Health experts also felt that the hospital groups have realised that they need to focus on the coastal region in order to boost their revenues. Reasoning that Arogyasri could be one reason for many such hospitals landing in Vijayawada, chief of Andhra Hospitals Ramana Murthy said that no new hospital would survive without the Arogyasri reimbursement in the city. "To break even after spending Rs 60-70 crore without Arogyasri could be a difficult proposition," he reasoned. Vijayawada, which presently has a combined bed strength of 1,300, will be adding more than 2,000 beds once all these hospitals start operating. With big groups landing here, the local hospitals are also rushing to expand their branches. "It's only a matter of time before Vijayawada emerges as a major hub for health care in the state," an expert added. |
