In a candid chat, Ileana vents her disappointment with ‘Shakthi’ and the constant speculation on her pay cheque

Your last film, “Shakthi”, didn’t fare well at the BO.Are you nervous about your next?
The success or failure of a film does not depend on me alone. To some extent, neither does it lie in the hands of my co-star or director. When people blame the director for the failure of a film, others associated with the movie join in the chorus. But when a movie’s a hit, everyone wants credit. I’m not the kind to do that. Failures did bother me a lot earlier. Then I decided to let go of it and focus on my character. The future of a film is not in my hands, but how I perform in it depends on me alone. So that’s my prime focus. Yes, “Shakthi” didn’t fare well and to be honest, I haven’t watched the film yet. But I have had people tell me that I looked good in the film.
Every review of the film harped on your good looks. No one said you acted well...
In “Shakthi” there wasn’t much for me to perform and I knew about it.
Why did you sign the film then?
When I signed on the dotted line, the story was very different. Later during the filming everything changed. What I was narrated was different from what shaped up. Of course the director did inform me about the changes, but I didn’t have much of a say in it.
Could you not put your foot down then?
The concept of a bound script does not work in T-Town. I knew what I’m getting into. I know I should put my foot down, but I trust my directors who have more experience in the industry and go with what they say.
If you continue doing films which do not showcase your acting prowess, your brand as an actor will suffer...
If it continues, yes my career will get affected. But I make sure that I space out films and not take up too much work. That way I can concentrate on what my character is — like in “Neenu Na Rakshasi”. My role is totally different from what I have done earlier. For a change I don’t play a glam-doll flipping my hair and smiling for the camera. It’s a subtle and real character.
People say you are going out of your way to promote this flick.
I wasn’t positive about “Shakthi”, so I didn’t speak much about it. The film had too much of everything in it. In the end, I didn’t know what the film was all about. And I’m not a hypocrite to smile and tell people to watch a film, when I am not convinced about it myself. Plus, at that time I wasn’t in town and I couldn’t come down to promote it. This time it’s different. I have the time and I’m here. Plus, I believe in the product.
Buzz is that you charge a bomb but fail to justify your price...
I don’t think anyone has the right to comment on my pay cheque. And as far as justifying my remuneration is concerned, I would like to tell my detractors that if I wasn’t worth it, my producers won’t be paying me that much.
Have you slashed your price for your B-town debut,“Barfee”?
Who says that I have slashed my price for Bollywood? I don’t believe in being underpaid. Plus, I’m not shifting bag and baggage to Bollywood. I’m working simultaneously in three languages — Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
There are also hushed whispers about you and RaNa...
If I’m in love with a man, I will walk hand-in-hand with him openly. RaNa is a dear friend of mine who has been very supportive of me professionally and in my personal life. When my mom launched her fashion line, he was there to show his support. I don’t care what people say about us.

Ileana’s confession creates ripples

Ileana admitted that her recent release, Shakti, was big disaster and she didn’t see the movie yet. In an interview to Times of India, the top actress made some sensational comments that the film’s script was changed during the film’s shooting itself. “When I signed on the dotted line, the story was very different. Later during the filming everything changed. What I was narrated was different from what shaped up," she said to the newspaper.
She seems to be clearly miffed with the movie. Because she thought this film would give another boost to her career as flops are filing up. It is nice to see a big actress like Ileana admitting the facts openly but it remains to how would producer Aswini Dutt react to it, as he still claims the film’ s running well.
