The startling disclosure by Sanjay Baru, former media advisor to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, on the humiliation meted out to former Prime Minister and Telugu icon P V Narasimha Rao has become a hot topic for discussion among political observers and media analysts on Monday.
Baru, while releasing a book “24, Akbar Road” (AICC office) written by noted journalist Rashid Kidwai in New Delhi on Sunday spilled the beans on the incident on December 23, 2004, the day when PV Narasimha Rao had died.
Reacting sharply to the comments made by Congress leaders Digvijay Singh and Mani Shankar Iyer that the decision to shift Narasimha Rao’s body to Hyderabad was taken by his sons and not the Congress party, Baru said the sons had, in fact, left the decision to the Congress party.
He recalled that he had received a telephonic call from some Congress leaders close to the power centre to make arrangements for shifting the body to Hyderabad; and that there was no question of cremating the body in New Delhi.
“Accordingly, we had to make the arrangements. Narasimha Rao’s sons had absolutely no role in that as they have left it to the discretion of the high command,” he said.
Baru, however, did not disclose the names of the Congress leaders who had sent him the message, but it was clear that the message was sent to him by none other than party boss Madam Sonia Gandhi.
Such was the humiliation to Narasimha Rao that his body was not even allowed into the AICC office for the party leaders to pay respects.
The leaders should definitely be those who are always around Sonia: it could be Ahmed Patel or Ghulam Nabi Azad or Digvijay Singh.
All said and done, Baru indirectly admitted that the Congress party had humiliated Narasimha Rao after his death. |
