Bodyguard Heads For Historic Record

Salman Khan’s latest release Bodyguard has created history at the box office. The film not only took an extraordinary opening but, according to most distributors across the country, it is also likely to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in its first week.
There were numerous factors that worked in favour of the film. To start with, like all previous Salman Khan films, this one too released on the actor’s lucky day, Eid, which fell on a Wednesday this year. This gives the film a nine-day week. Second, the other films that released along with Bodyguard are not big films. Thus, Bodyguard occupied the largest number of shows at almost all cinemas across the country and also enjoyed housefull shows at most cinema halls. Now due to the nine day-week, distributors predict that the film will cross the Rs 100-crore mark in the first week itself.
In Mumbai, the movie had a three-day collection of round about Rs 50 crore. According to Shyam Shroff of Shringar Films, “The movie will definitely earn more than Rs 100 crore in its first week, and it continues to go strong at almost all cinema halls. It is indeed a blockbuster.”
Another Mumbai distributor says, “Bodyguard earned approximately Rs 21.25 crore net in its first-day collections, leaving behind blockbusters such as Dabangg and 3 Idiots, which also had record first-day opening collections. So I think Bodyguard is likely to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in its first week.”
In Delhi too, distributors were ga-ga over the film. Says Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts, “Bodyguard is likely to break all records and will definitely do business of Rs 100 crore in the upcoming nine days.”
Punjab distributors too are optimistic but they predict that the film might take a little longer to cross the Rs 100-crore mark. Dharam Pal of Paramount Pictures says, “The movie will surpass Rs 100 crore but not in its first week.”
Kolkata distributor Debashish Dey of Aum Moviez adds, “The collections of Bodyguard have already crossed Rs 90 crore in the first three days. So it will obviously earn more than Rs 100 crore in week one, without a doubt.”
In Nizam and Rajasthan, distributors were singing the same tune. Ravi Macchar of Sahyog Films says, “In Nizam, Bodyguard is going very strong. The audience is really appreciating the film and it will do business worth Rs 100 crore in its first week.”
Adds Sanjay Marudhar of Marudhar Entertainment, “Since the movie has the benefit of a nine-day first week, which includes major holidays, it will be quite easy for it to earn a profit of Rs 100 crore in the first week.”
From Orissa, Jeetu Khandelwal of Movie Pioneers says, “It’s an all-time record for Salman Khan’s movies – Dabangg and Ready, and now Bodyguard’s collections are going to be far better.” |

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard 2 Days Net – Rs. 38 Crore!

After taking an unprecedented opening across India and even abroad, the Salman Khan-starrer, Bodyguard, has made another Rs. 17.50 crore in all-India net collections on day 2 (Thursday, September 1). This takes the film’s total two-day tally to a humongous Rs. 38 crore!
Bodyguard continued to do roaring business in the Overseas circuit also. In UK, the film collected a massive 200,000 pounds on day two (Wednesday, August 31). The takes the total UK gross to a record Rs. 260,000 pounds.
It is now estimated that the film might even cross the Rs. 80-85 crore mark in its five-day weekend. |

Salman Khan's BODYGUARD has smashed all previous records and has emerged the biggest opener ever in the history of Hindi cinema. The film collected Rs 21.51 cr nett on Wednesday and Rs 18.30 cr nett on Thursday, taking the 2-day total to Rs 39.81 cr nett. The business is expected to zoom upwards from Friday onwards, when the weekend begins. At the rate it is faring, the film can cross the magical figure of Rs 85 cr + in its 5-day weekend, which will be a new record. |

NEW DELHI: He is Bollywood's biggest paisa vasool star today. That's what theatre-owner Rachit Malhotra thinks of Salman Khan. Malhotra owns Agra's Jwala cinema, a single-screen theatre with an abundant 1,139 seats. Yet on Wednesday (Eid) and Thursday, they weren't enough to accommodate the frenzied fans who queued outside for a ticket. Every show of Bodyguard, Salman's latest release, was houseful.
"For the audience, Salman is the film. Everything else is secondary. They aren't just whistling when he bares his chest. They are even dancing outside the hall. They know a Sallu bhai movie is always tension-free, with entertainment guaranteed," says Malhotra.
It's a similar tale in each of the four single-screen theatres and the three multiplexes in the city of the Taj. "Combined, there are about 60 shows of Bodyguard every day in Agra. Most are houseful. That's staggering," he says.
The success story is being replicated across India, even abroad. Trade expert Komal Nahta says the film raked in a record-breaking 11 lakh dirham (about Rs 1.36 crore) on Tuesday, the opening day in Dubai. Even in UK, the first-day collection of £60,000 (about Rs 44 lakh) was equally impressive.
"The movie could cross Rs 85 crore in the first nine days. Overall, it could end up netting around Rs 125 crore," says Nahta, editor, Film Information. Bodyguard's box-office figures - his third major recent hit along with Dabangg (2010) and Ready (2011) - might bring a smile on the lips of India's most famous bachelor. Smiling won't be easy though. Salman has trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes acute pain in the jaw. He is currently undergoing treatment in the US.
Like Bodyguard, Dabangg and Wanted (2009) were also released during Eid. "He has a huge following among the Muslim youth. With an Eid release he is able to capitalize on it," says Nahta. That's correct but not the full truth. The 45-year-old actor is equally popular among urban lower-middle class youth and the underclass across communities.
Social scientist Shiv Viswanathan believes the secret of Salman's popularity lies in his ability to combine machismo and irreverence, innocence and mischievousness. "He combines opposites effortlessly," he says.
Distributor Sanjay Mehta puts the second surge in the star's popularity in perspective. In the past 10 years, Bollywood was dominated by feel-good family dramas, love stories and naughty comedies. "Salman was the first to spot the shortage of action films. and its possible demand. With Wanted and Dabangg, he reinvented himself as an all-action hero who also delivers one-liners, makes people laugh. With a few changes, Bodyguard continues in the same vein," he says.
Salman's bulging biceps in Veergati (1995) spurred the 'bodybuilding' craze in small town India. Almost two decades later, he continues to be every neighbourhood gym's No. 1 poster boy. Yet, his major early hits were either romantic comedies or emotional dramas: Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam .
The actor's reinvention as an action star became possible after the regular men of muscle -- Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgun and Akshay Kumar -- recast themselves as funny-face comics and uneasy romantics. The new Salman filled that gap. True, he was always at home in action flicks (Garv, 2003). But with Wanted and Dabangg, he repositioned himself as Bollywood's top action man.
Viswanathan says that part of Salman's charm lies in the fact that he makes no claims of being an intellectual. "He is just normal and healthy, a child of nature, the boy next door. And he is sheer entertainment. He is non-problematic intellectually. And that works in an age where everybody seems to be into problem solving," he says. Mehta says that Salman's rebellious streak has also endeared him to the masses. "They find him more human," he says.
In recent years, the actor has matured in real life. Salman doesn't make headlines any more for allegedly shooting black bucks or breaking glass panes of his girlfriend's home or reportedly driving over people sleeping on the pavement. Now he makes news primarily for breaking box-office records, for being able to figure out the people's pulse unerringly. Time and again. There is something about Salman Khan. |

Bodyguard Second Day Early Estimate

Bodyguard has grossed around 16 crore nett as per early estimates on Thursday. This takes its two day business to 37 crore nett plus in two days.
It is an a huge number and the film was rock steady at places but on the other hand there were places which showed a more than normal drop coming off a holiday. Cities like Bangalore, Gurgaon and Chandigarh had a 30% plus drop at many multiplexes. On the other sides single screens in places like Kanpur, Lucknow and Jodhpur hardly dropped.
A normal drop after such a big holiday would have been 15-20% but this is a little bit more but collections are also at very high levels.
Bodyguard is a huge winner but will need to sustain well from here on to become the biggest hit of the year which looked a certainty after the first day of 21 crore nett. |

NEW DELHI: It has been a very happy Eid for Salman Khan three years in a row. After Dabangg in 2010 and Wanted in 2009, his latest movie, Bodyguard, released on Wednesday, has set a new record for first day’s box-office collections. It netted an estimated Rs 20 crore, beating the Rs 14.5-crore opening of Dabangg (last Eid), and the Rs 13.5 crore collected by his friend and rival Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots in 2009.
With several full-house shows and strong advance bookings even for weekdays,Bodyguard could even emerge as one of the biggest grossers of all time, cementing Salman’s position as Bollywood’s biggest boxoffice draw more than 20 years after he made his debut in Maine Pyaar Kiyain 1989.
Over the last two years, in terms of box-office collections, Khan’s movies have also been beating high-decibel releases of Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. But a reason for that could be the wider reach that Khan’s Hindi movies get across the country, whereas Rajinikanth’s Tamil movies are released primarily in theatres in the south, an exception being Robot, which had a Hindi version.
Long queues reminiscent of the openings of Amitabh Bachchan’s movies in the 1970s and 1980s were reported from cities and towns. “Our theatres in Gorakhpur, Patiala and Bijnor are witnessing a deluge of Salman fans. We are sold out for the next few days,” said Tinku Singh of SRS Cinemas, which has theatres across UP, Haryana and Punjab.
At Anurag Cinema in Meerut, shows of Bodyguard are sold out for a few days, said head booking clerk Bharat Kumar. “The crowds have gone mad. There is commotion all around here.”
The movie’s co-producer, Reliance Big Pictures, which spent Rs 22 crore on marketing, says it will raise thatamount through Day 1 collections alone. “We estimate the first day’s business can touch Rs 20 crore net, which will be unprecedented,” said Sanjeev Lamba, chief executive officer of Reliance Entertainment.
Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahata said the movie would have garnered Rs 18-19 crore in collections. “This looks like the biggest opening weekend ever.
Salman Khan has achieved superstardom,” he said. “Bodyguard has monstrous, earth-shattering, mindboggling opening,” tweeted Taran Adarsh, another trade analyst.
Khan and his team followed a recent trend in Bollywood of launching films ahead of Friday - the day films are traditionally released in India - to take advantage of the extended weekend, which began on Wednesday with Eid. Many parts of the country will be closed for Ganesh Chaturthi on Thursday. The movie has been released across 2,800 screens in India. Multiplex chains are reporting houseful shows, with occupancies ranging between 85% and 100%.
“Bodyguard is witnessing 100% occupancy across shows. Even advance bookings for several shows in the coming days are sold out. We believe there will be repeat audience for the film,” said Gautam Dutta, chief operating officer at PVR, which operates multi-screen theatres in many cities in the country.
Tushar Dhingra, the COO at the ADAG-owned Big Cinemas, which runs theatres in many cities in India, said the film has done well across both big and small centres. “Bookings are averaging 85-100% across board. Audiences are pouring in and advance bookings for the rest of the week are also strong,” he said.

Salman Khan Beats Own Record In Dubai

The Salman Khan starrer Bodyguard opened in several countries worldwide on Tuesday (August 30) and not on Wednesday (August 31) as was the case in India. In Dubai, the film collected an unimaginable and earth-shattering 11 lakh dirhams on the opening day (Tuesday). The previous opening day record was held by another Salman Khan starrer, Dabangg, which had collected 7 lakh dirhams. Although both Dabangg andBodyguard are Eid releases, the new film has surpassed the old one by a huge margin.
The initial in UK, where also the film released on Tuesday (August 30), was phenomenal. The first day’s gross was a whooping 60,000 pounds. Point to be noted is that usually if a film releases even a day before the scheduled day (Friday), the collections are not up to the mark. But in the case of Salman Khan’s film, they are not just good but outstanding.
So it’s not just in India that the audiences have gone berserk over Bodyguard, but Salman Khan’s fans all over the world have given his latest starrer the warmest welcome anybody can imagine. |

Bodyguard Early First Day Estimate - 21 Crore Nett

Bodyguard has smashed all records on Eid and seems to have collected around 21 crore nett as per early estimates. The Eid holiday helped a bit but still it is 15-20% more than any other film has collected on any day let alone its first day day.
There were circuit records in every circuit while four circuits crossed the 1 crore nett for the first time ever on first day. They were West Bengal, CP Berar, Rajasthan and Nizam. Multiplexes and single screens were both phenomenal across the board.
Bodyguard will have extra shows at multiplexes today (Thursday) as many multiplexes started shows at Noon yesterday but there is still likely to be a drop in all India collections as yesterday was a holiday for Eid and today is a normal day. |

Bodyguard Takes Record-Breaking Opening

Salman Khan, the man with the Midas touch, has whipped up a storm at the box office once more, this time with Bodyguard rocking the ticket counter on its opening day. After taking a bumper opening in almost all territories, the film has already created records across the country. And as predicted, the film has marked Khan’s hat-trick at the box office – yet another marvelous Eid release.
In Mumbai, Bodyguard took an extraordinary opening. An ecstatic Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines says, “The film opened to 100 per cent occupancy. It has done very well and the audience is really appreciating the film. Bodyguard has the potential to break all the box-office records. The weekend is expected to be phenomenal.”
Delhi too is dancing to the same tune. Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts reveals, “100-per cent opening with three days packed with advance bookings. The weekend is going to be record-breaking!” Ghai says the film is running to full houses everywhere, and predicts that the film’s weekend business will break the records set by 3 Idiots and Dabangg.
In East Punjab too, distributors are jubilant. Dharam Pal of Paramount Pictures remarks, “The opening of Bodyguard has been extraordinary. The film is doing exceptionally well in single-screens as well as multiplexes and it took an opening of 100 per cent across the entire region. We are looking forward for a record-breaking weekend and week.”
The film capitalised on the number of shows in Nizam, where it has already broken the record for the maximum number of shows in a day, at 78 shows daily in Aurangabad alone. According to Ravi Machchar of Sahyog Films, “The opening of Bodyguard in multiplexes was phenomenal and in single-screens, mind-blowing. The film took an opening of 100 per cent. It is a superhit and will do even better over the weekend. Notching up another record, Bodyguard has released in the maximum number of single-screens in Aurangabad. A film usually releases in three screens but this film has released in seven single-screens.”
Sunil Bansal of Yash Raj Jai Pictures in Rajasthan adds, “Bodyguard has had an extraordinary opening everywhere in Rajasthan. With a 100-per cent opening, it is expected to clock weekend business of Rs 55 crore, all-India.”
In Orissa, Bodyguard has received tremendous reports. Jeetu Khandelwal of Pioneer Movies reveals, “The film opened 100 per cent in Orissa. Its opening is marvelous and the movie will break all records as far as box-office numbers go.” |

BODYGUARD is all set to create history and emerge the biggest opener ever in the history of Hindi cinema. The film embarked on a 95% to 100% start everywhere in India and has been maintaining the momentum since the morning shows on Wednesday.
