Anam Vivekananda Reddy - The 'saree' man - Pics

Congress MLA from Andhra Pradesh used a public event to display his eccentric behaviour. Anam Vivekananda Reddy, who represents Nellore (Rural) constituency in the Andhra assembly, used the easy way.

The politician, known for his carefree attitude and flamboyant lifestyle, shocked everyone this week when he draped a saree and sported bangles after inaugurating a crafts bazaar in Nellore on Monday. Anam, known to sport dark shades at all times, also applied lipstick and tried on trinkets in full public view.

Anam, after inaugurating the handloom crafts bazaar, was checking out the stalls when a bangle stall caught his fancy. Before anyone could react, he picked up a few bangles on display and put them on his left hand. He then moved on to the adjacent stall selling sarees. Before onlookers could get over the fact that a democratically elected leader was sporting bangles, Anam pulled out a saree from the store and covered his head with the pallu . The leader was 'sporting' enough to pose for the shutterbugs while the sales girls had a good laugh.

If the visitors to the bazaar thought the MLA was done with entertaining them for the day, they were in for a treat. A few stalls later, Anam stopped at a stall selling cosmetics. He asked for a lipstick and a mirror - and got busy applying it. The shocked shopkeeper was left speechless.

The next stall sold artificial jewellery and Anam tried out the designs on offer. And all the people around had a good laugh.

But being a responsible public representative, his behaviour appeared odd and obnoxious to the onlookers. The leader, however, laughed it off as pure, harmless fun. 'I just did it for fun. It is being unnecessarily highlighted in the media,' he said.

'Anam is known for such antics.

He tries to create an impression that he is one of the people. But quite often, it boomerangs on him,' a local Congress leader, who refused to be named, said.

The leader said Anam has a history of gimmickry. 'He will stop at a tea stall and make tea for himself.

Sometimes he will visit a roadside hotel and start making dosa.

There are also instances of him ironing clothes. When he visits agricultural fields, he drives a tractor,' the Congress leader said.

Despite trying to project himself as one of the people, Anam has expensive tastes. The chain- smoker prefers smoking imported cigars in public places and drives a German luxury car. 'He was once fined for smoking on the assembly premises,' the leader added.
