Some one commented in CNN:
India is the most peaceful and patient country in the world. We have a policy of "No First Use" and "Credible Minimal Deterrence". We don`t talk about going to war, threaten to go to war or threaten countries with preemptive strikes. Look at the number of people who die in India of terrorist attacks, we are patient and resilient. Our policy is to negotiate even with the enemies. I think that is a sign of strength. Look at the present condition, one example - Iraq war. The western governments didn`t have any aggression from Iraq, they chose a preemptive strike without giving negotiations a chance. How many lives were lost, what happened to the economy. Can you imagine 600,000 civilians die? Men, women, children? Did it solve anything? War is not the answer.
We invest in the military to protect ourselves from aggression. Also, its a political game. If we didn`t have nuclear weapons, don`t you think the western powers would treat us differently? Why is Iran determined to gain one nuclear weapon when they could be wiped out by the powers if they did chose to use one? Why do countries threaten them with preemptive strikes?
About people who think we should invest in sanitation, infrastructure and food production - we would rather die free than live as slaves, that part of our history is over. We learnt our lesson. Also, why invest in sanitation, infrastructure and food production if we live under the shadow of war when everything can be wiped off. Now with our military capability no one will dare to attack us.
Also, India taking aid from western powers is a pure world political game. No way around it even if you don`t want aid, its thrust upon you.
