Vijayawada, Machilipatnam hit by Opposition's bandh
VIJAYAWADA, APRIL 27:
Bandh was observed here and at Machilipatnam, the port town which is the headquarters of Krishna district, on Friday in response to the call given by the Opposition parties to pressurise the State Government to take up the construction of Machilipatnam (Bandar) port. Bandh was partial here, but total at Machilipatnam.
The port project, taken up during the tenure of the late Chief Minister Dr Y.S Rajasekhar Reddy in 2008, is getting delayed for one reason or the other. Originally, it was awarded to Maytas Infra, of the Satyam group, but following the Satyam scandal it was re-awarded to Navayuga Engineering Company. But the work on the project has not started, as the company is demanding more land.
The opposition leaders staged demonstrations and stopped traffic here and in different towns of Krishna district. Banks did not function here. The leaders blamed the State Government for the inordinate delay in the project execution.
They said the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, had promised during his recent visit to the district that the port project would be taken up soon, but he had not kept his promise.
Mr K. Narayana, Member of Parliament from Machilipatnam, demanded that the State Government take up the project immediately, as it was vital for the all-round development of Krishna district and the neighbouring coastal districts. He and other leaders threatened to intensify the agitation if the State Government did not heed to their pleas.
Three berths are proposed to be constructed at Machilipatnam in the first phase and the project cost is estimated at Rs 1,600 crore. |
