London: Britain has now placed a cap on migrants from outside the European Union and only 24,100 non-EU professionals can be hired by British employers every year.

The move will kill the hopes of thousands of highly skilled Indian professionals who dream of working in the UK after Britain's newly elected coalition government on Monday announced a temporary cap on the number of non-European professionals who can take up jobs in the country. Only 24,100 immigrants looking for work will be allowed to enter until April 2011. But there are loopholes and some flexibility too.

"Today we have the introduction of a temporary cap which is understandable because they are trying to cap the inflow of people coming in with a natural cap, but unfortunately there are all sorts of distortions this is likely to create while we have a temporary cap," says Chief Executive of London First Baroness Jo Valentine.

The UK government is encouraging businesses, rather than professionals to move in.

"We want to see as many IT professionals coming in to London if that is where they want to do business. If they happen to be employed by a UK company or an overseas owned company already operating in London, they will be able to transfer within the company. If they are trying to come in brand new they might have a problem," says Baroness Jo Valentine.
