India's latter day rise as a global superpower is currently the stuff of print articles and documentaries, there are a few hiccups that go with this Indian Good News story, take Mumbai, that teeming nations financial capital and Cosmopolitan business hub. Mumbai also happens to be the stronghold of the extremist Hindu Nationalist Party, Shiv Sena, the militants who a short while back - threatened Australia's touring cricketers. Yalda Hakim reports that these Hindu hardliners have a history of using violence to promote their fanaticism. REPORTER: Yalda Hakim High in the hills, north of Mumbai, I've come to see one of India's most feared organisations, worship one of their heroes. Thousands have gathered here for an annual pilgrimage. This is Raigad Fort, home to one of India's greatest Warrior kings, Chattrapati Shivaji. Shivaji was crowned here more than 300 years ago after forcing Muslim mughals out of Maharashtra state in a bloody battle. Today Shivaji has become a potent symbol of Maharashtra's state nationalism and formed an army of supporters. Known as Shiv Sena, they are India's far right Hindu Nationalist Party. ANIL DESAI, SHIV SENA SPOKESMAN: Shiv Sena is the party of the people, for the people, by the people… NIKHIL WAGLE, NEWS DIRECTOR: They go to people, they threaten them… extort money, if people don’t give them money, they beat them. Later back in its stronghold of Mumbai, Shiv Sena is holding a political rally. Though Shiv Sena has led the State Government in the past, it's currently in Opposition. It's working hard to get back into power. The party has a reputation for violence towards Muslims and foreigners and yet has tens of thousands of passionate followers. Uddav Thackeray is Shiv Sena's leader and preaches the party's version of democracy. UDDAV THACKERAY, SS LEADER (Translation): Remember this…..any movement against the will of the public, Shiv Sena will bring down. This is called democracy. Uddav Thackeray took over seven years ago from his charismatic father. Bala Sahib, as he's affectionately known remains enormously popular, Anil Desai is Shiv Sena's spokesperson. ANIL DESAI: Of course, it goes without saying, he is like a God for us, he is our God… UDDAV THACKERAY: And I ask you people to come and join me. Come with me. If you come, I will come along, if you don't, I'll go alone. Thackeray founded Shiv Sena in the '60s, the ideology that it belonged to local people to the exclusion of all others. UDDAV THACKERAY (Translation): Foreigners call me Hitler. ‘Well, people say that you are Hitler.” The fools! If I were Hitler you would not dare sit in front of me. I would send you to the gas chamber – I don’t need a gas chamber – if you live in Chembur, you will die. That is our gas chamber. NIKHIL WAGLE: There are very few leaders in entire India who praise Adolf Hitler publicly, but Thackeray says, yes I like Hitler and I’m a benevolent dictator, he says this to public. So he is a, he is not a normal politician… he is a crack pot politician. Nikhil Wagle is the News Director of IBN Lockmat, seen in CNN's sister channel in India. This is what happened when Shiv Sena's thugs stormed the TV station last November, attacking him and his journalists. The savage assault was recorded on closed circuit television. NIKHIL WAGLE: They came from the lift and directly attacked the glass panels. There was no negotiation. There was nothing. But Nikhil Wagle isn't afraid to take on the thugs for the party's leaders. NIKHIL WAGLE: Every time I criticise them, they attack me – I do my job, they do their job. It is like that. He accuses Shiv Sena of being involved with India's criminal gangs. NIKHIL WAGLE: Shiv Sena is a political mafia, right from the beginning, Shiv Sena was always connected to underworld, Shiv Sena is not a thug-like party – it is a party of thugs. They extort money – it is a political mafia! So you can’t call them a thug-like party. It is a party of thugs. Shiv Sena was allegedly instrumental in insighting the 1992/'93 riots in Mumbai in which almost 1,000 people were killed, mostly Muslims. But Muslims aren't its only targets. After Indian students were attacked in Australia, Shiv Sena declared in their newspaper that Australian cricketers should be banned. But Shiv Sena spokesman, Anil Desai denies his organisation resorts to violence, instead citing the party's family values. ANIL DESAI: Basically our party is based on family, so when family is there, emotions are there. There is real affection, there is humanity… if you see these things, Shiv Sena compared to all these parties, Shiv Sena is tied up these values. Shiv Sena's latest target is the king of Bollywood, movie star Shah Rukh Khan. In February thousands of the party's supporters were taken into custody for attacking movie theatres that were showing the star's latest film - Shah Rukh Khan's crime, calling for the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in the Indian Premier League. ANIL DESAI: Unfortunately the government tried to shelter him - which was wrong on their part and people who came down in protest, that shows that Shiv Sena stand for perfect and he was on the wrong footing. But critics see the attacks as a publicity stunt by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray NIKHIL WAGLE: One day he makes a statement and an entire television channel crew goes to him, they ask for his reaction, then if he gives a reaction, government reacts, entire city reacts, city comes to a standstill, Shiv Sena comes on the street, so he enjoys that kind of politics. ANIL DESAI: Shiv Sena is spread out from every strata of society, from down to top. Shiv Sena is effectively a parallel Government here in Maharashtra, and the Hindu nationalists have a greater goal, to control the nation under their saffron banner. ANIL DESAI: This saffron flag will be flying very high… and it will take India to great heights, tomorrow’s superpower, what India is termed, that can be proved if Shiv Sena gets the power. ~ Hell has three gates: lust, anger, and greed ~
