A few weeks ago, while casually flipping the channels, I came across a rather funny interview of Ram Gopal Varma, a noted Bollywood and Telugu movie director. The anchor was asking tricky questions and the call-in person was accusing RGV of incorrectly portraying her brother�s character in a movie that RGV was just about wrapping up.
Truth be told, that was when I thought I should watch this movie. So, if that whole affair was stage managed by the PR company that RGV had hired for this movie�s promotion � Time to rejoice! It worked in my case.
The trailers and the interviews set the tone of the movie correctly. Yes! There will be blood. There has been quite a lot of it and you are a fool if you expect a Swiss duet in this movie.
As a matter of fact, the last thing I want to see in any movie is a duet in Switzerland. So when a cousin of mine called me up at 10:15pm to tell me the premier show was at 10:45pm, I paused not a second before blurting out � Yes I am game.
And what a movie it has been! All my expectations have been surpassed and the screenplay is easily one of the best I have seen in the recent past. Right from the word go � the viewer is taken on a roller coaster ride full of ups and downs but there is never a dull moment � Blink your eyes at your own risk � for there is a significant chance that you might miss something really important. Of course there is one song in the movie that really comes across as a dampener and is my only complaint on the movie. Oh well, we do need it for the cigarette break. Don�t we? And we do need a smoke after weathering the onslaught of blood for over an hour.
The screenplay � I can�t stop raving about it � surprises and delights constantly. Things happen on the screen when you least expect them to. The camera angles are vintage Ramu! The background music score is par excellence. The acting is super! Especially Shatrughan Sinha in a brief but very powerful role of a cinema actor who floats a political party and becomes the Chief Minister of the state. HIs role is the best written role in the movie and he has the best lines as well. Thundering applause every time he uttered a word.
Vivek Oberoi gets into the skin of the character Pratap effortlessly. Watch out for his introduction scene and pay attention to the audio design of the sequence. That is a textbook example of elevating the screen presence without resorting to beaten to death clichés like panning the camera up from the shoes of the hero. Three cheers to the director for conceptualizing it and a thumbs up for the music designer.
Rest of the cast play their characters with aplomb. The guy who essays Bokka Reddy is stunning. So is Sushant who plays Pratap�s elder brother.
The movie takes you to a different world altogether and just abandons you there. The end is the most disappointing end I have seen till date because the movie does not end there. It will all make sense only after we watch the next installment � Rakta Charitra 2 � where we will be introduced to Suriya � and the Clash of the Titans. Can�t hardly wait!
People in Andhra Pradesh will relate to the movie completely and can easily guess which real life icons the characters correspond to. There is a reason why CM Shivaji Rao�s lines got the best response in the movie hall. I doubt if the national audience would react in the same way � for they don�t have the context.
This movie is not for the fainthearted. At the same time, there is no gory violence. Yes, heads are smashed under rocks but you don�t get to see it explicitly. Still, I don�t think it is everyone�s cup of tea. Regardless of the movie�s commercial fate, it would remain a cult classic. And if my sources are to be believed, the movie has been shot quite economically. Unless it is a disaster, it should recover its investment.
Verdict: Go watch it. But leave your kids at home. It is Adults Only and I mean it. |

If first half is about the revenge drama of Paritala Ravi, the second half is about the Rising of a new Leader..from Rakthaneethi to Rajaneethi.Here comes NTR (Shivaji Rao ,the Super star) ..Like most of the people , he did not hype NTR as the genuine,honest leader. The point RGV highlighted is 'For a man to grow ,he has to use people' and NTR is also a man and is no excepion to this.Well, many might not digest this but this is how it is.(For all undigested fellows,take that character as Shivaji Rao).
And the movie ends with Raktha Charithra -2 trailer giving us the feel that this part is not a movie but a terrific trailer for the arriving BloodBath.
*Performances:* I am a kid to comment on their performances. Every body is at their best . If at all I really want a defect in the movie,the only thing I can say is RGV's voice over in the back ground. That somehow did not suit the tone of the movie.Never mind, BGM dominates through out the movie with out giving you any idea of above mentioned one.
RGV , I mentioned earlier that he is a over hyped man. Yes , that may be true ,in fact that is true,but this time he has reached that over hype and gave us a hit after many days(years).
-ves : Only 1: Dabbunnoda or some song which I didn't even try to concentrate as it is off the mood of the movie but of course in sync with the scene in the movie
*Overall* , if you rate Prasthanam as 100F on a Fahrenheit Scale, to rate this movie the thermometer bursts ..Go with what ever expectations ,the movie will reach them.You wil not be disappointed. But before that bear in your mind that you are going to watch a vulgar filled violently carved Vendetta . A clean A movie. |
